In voodoo, a hollowed-out gourd used as a container holds strong symbolic and ritual significance.
Used as a container in voodoo is a powerful spiritual symbol, utilized to contain and interact with invisible forces, offer tributes to spirits, or protect its owner. Its exact meaning depends on the contents and the specific ritual context.
It may represent the human body or the universe, encapsulating vital essence. It is often used to store spiritual energies, talismans, or offerings to the spirits.
The gourd, can be also a tool for communicating with spirits. It can be filled with sacred objects such as herbs, ritual powders, shells, or symbols of the voodoo spirits. They serve to invoke and maintain a connection with spiritual entities, protect the owner, or attract good fortune.
Others meaning of the gourd may be for protection, offering to gods or ancestors, tool for purification and healing, symbol of fertility and abundance.

To those who observe it, Lent may seem like a long time, but really it’s the lengthening days as we approach the spring equinox that are etymologically important. The Modern English word Lent is a shortening of Old English lencten, which originally meant “spring” before being co-opted to refer to the period of abstemiousness that runs from Ash Wednesday to Easter in the Christian calendar. It referred to the lengthening daylight at that time of year, coming from West Germanic *langitinaz “lengthening of day”, from the Proto-Germanic *langaz “long”, which itself became Old English lang and Modern English long, + *tina- “day” (from the Proto-Indo-European root *dyeu- “to shine”). Length and lengthen also come from this same root, from the abstract noun *langitho, made up from *langaz + *-itho, a suffix that creates abstract nouns from adjectives (also in pairs like strong/strength). Germanic *langaz ultimately comes from Proto-Indo-European *dlon-gho-, a suffixed form of the root *del- “long”. The change in the vowel that you can still see in the pair long/length (and in strong/strength) is caused by i-mutation from the /i/ in the suffix *-itho (though the /i/ is no longer present in the modern form of the word) pulling the original back vowel forward and higher up in the mouth closer to where the /i/ sound is made, and this is the same with Lent due to the /i/ in *tina- “day”.

In 16th and 17th century Iran, domesticated pigeons were a valuable resource.
Due to the lack of grasslands, in the desert areas it was impossible to produce fertilizers for agriculture.
Rich in nitrogen, pigeon guano was used across Iran as a natural fertilizer for fields.
To gather this precious resource, homes were built for the pigeons.
Often over six stories high and 45 to 75 feet in diameter, these towering structures were filled with a honeycomb of small roosts for the pigeons. Each tower held as many as 14,000 pigeons.
The towers are also an unique example of architectural style.
Over the years these buildings became more advanced and pigeons became the most popular species for this purpose.
Aside from the primary use of these towers, they also provided feather, meat and eggs.
Today, due to the use of artificial fertilizer, only a few hundred pigeon towers remain operational.
