Bournemouth agree deal for Milos Kerkez replacement

Bournemouth have reached an agreement with Rennes to sign left-back Adrien Truffert - as Milos Kerkez continues to be linked with a move to Liverpool.

Fabrizio Romano claims Truffert a deal was agreed between the two sides on Monday, and a medical will follow next.

The Cherries, meanwhile, value Kerkez at £45m.

Paul Joyce has chimed in, it's only a matter of when now.

The Reds have lodged three bids so far, with the highest worth £113m (£100m plus £13m in add-ons).

That bid has been rejected by Leverkusen who have continued to hold out for their dream £126m valuation.

However, both The Times’ Paul Joyce and the Daily Mail’s Merseyside correspondent, Lewis Steele, insisted a fourth bid will be made.

Furthermore, Steele suggested Leverkusen could finally relax their demands by dropping their asking price from £126m to roughly £118m.

Joyce and Steele stressed all parties involved – Liverpool, Leverkusen, Wirtz and his representatives – fully expect a deal will be done.

That was followed by Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg predicting a club-to-club agreement will be struck in the next “one, two or three days.”

Some sports jounalists need to catch up with the 21st century.

Here's why it's problematic:

When commentators, fans, or media overemphasize the physical attributes of Black athletes — like pace, power, or “natural talent” — while ignoring or downplaying their intelligence, discipline, or tactical awareness, it feeds into long-standing racial stereotypes. These stereotypes:

Suggest that Black success is innate or animalistic, not earned.

Imply that white or non-Black players succeed through effort, intelligence, and leadership — framing them as the “thinking” athletes.

Strip Black athletes of their agency, as if their excellence is something that just “happens” to them rather than something they worked hard to achieve.

This has been well-documented in studies of sports media and commentary, and it can have real-world consequences — including how players are perceived, scouted, coached, and remembered.
In John Barnes’s case:

Focusing only on his natural flair erases just how:

Technically skilled and tactically versatile he was.

Mentally resilient he had to be, playing under racist abuse.

Dedicated he was to evolving his game when his body changed.

Barnes himself has spoken about these issues — including the lazy and coded language used by media to describe Black players.

Besides, Doyle is diminishing Barnes as a highly disciplined sportsman, which he absolutely was, a miraculous combination of discipline and natural talent.
