Night falls at an interesting trainyard full of old vintage trains, locomotives, and yes, trailers as well. To create this night photo, I placed the camera on a tripod. Then I lit the scene with a handheld flashlight while the camera shutter was open for a long time. This is called "light painting." It's more fun than AI-generated images.

This old beauty—likely a late 1930s Chrysler—rests quietly in Ranch Park, Susanville, CA. Once part of ranch land, the area is now a public park, and this rusting relic has become a favorite subject of mine.

I captured this photo by stacking 15 separate images for the sky to reduce noise and highlight the stars. The car was lit using a handheld flashlight across several frames—an old-school light painting technique. Everything was blended in post to create this final result.

It’s always a thrill to blend history and the cosmos in one frame. 🌌🚘

This image captures an abandoned car (late 1930s Chrysler, if I'm not mistaken) that sits in Ranch Park in Susanville, California, USA. The park was set aside from ranch land that sits adjacent to the town, hence the name. I don’t know much about this old relic but assume it was abandoned there before the area became a park. One thing I do know is that I find it very photogenic! This image was created by capturing several images without moving the camera and artistically blending them in post-production. Fifteen separate frames were stacked together for the sky, dramatically reducing digital “noise.” I then captured several more frames by “light painting” the car with a handheld flashlight and combined the whole package together for the final image.

Do you need fuel for the soul? If so, you might want to visit Soul Service Station, a Desert X art installation created by Alison Saar, located in Desert Hot Springs, CA. On a cool night after the rains had come, I perched my camera on a tripod, opened the shutter for a long time, then walked around lighting this subject with a handheld light. The mountains in the back are Joshua Tree National Park, my spiritual home for night photography.

I have managed to keep my new years resolution to cut my caffeine consumption to half. I now drink coffee 3-4 cups a week instead of 7-10. I don't like drinking coffee every day because I can feel the caffeine tolerance go up quite quickly and I hate feeling tired from the low key withdrawal. I'm now way less tired as baseline and I can feel the energizing effects of coffee better.

Many people who have trouble waking up in the morning are long time coffee drinkers. If you are addicted to caffeine you will have some level of withdrawal tiredness when you wake up which is why you might not be able to function before the delicious morning coffee. Of course some people are naturally more energetic towards the evening and more tired in the morning (I'm the opposite) but heavy caffeine use can definitely make mornings more tough.
