I came across this new video about an open source synth that works on Linux:

Then I checked the developers' website and... there is plenty of stuff there! I haven't tried anything but it seems they are not listed on LinuxDaw.

Their blog looks hardcore dev, but I have no clue: ryukau.blogspot.com

Anyway, in case this is interesting to someone.

SoundFont-based MIDI playback is working in Benben again :D It's using an (updated) version of my old native Common Lisp library that handles SoundFont synthesis and General MIDI playback. This library used to be called CL-MeltySynth, but I've since merged it into my "sequenced formats" library, CL-RemiChips.

There are still places I can optimize the MIDI playback, including new ones that I've learned since I first made the library, so CPU usage will drop by the time Benben v0.7.0 is released. Not that it's all that high to begin with... but yeah.

Here it is. Post 2 in my series on #Linux #accessibility. This time, I'm digitally screaming about the audio stack.

One thing I notice when reading about people's problems #switching to #linuxaudio is that their attempts/workflows often seem quite complex.
To avoid setbacks and frustration, my suggestion would be to start simple and accept limitations in the beginning, get to know the system better, and then aim for more complex setups as your know-how grows.

#LinuxAudio journey update. After locating a truly epic looking script from #BrendanIngram on #GitHub and being disappointed at it not working it looks like this script has not really been updated properly in a long, long while. KXStudio references were pointing to an out of date script. Heading over to KXStudio: Repositories (kx.studio/Repositories) reveals the updated script calls needed. Making those changes in the local version of Brendan's script has resulted in a script which runs.

#LinuxAudio journey so far. I've downgraded to Linux Mint 21 Vanessa in the hopes that a nice looking script will work to load a bunch of #ProAudio features. This looks great, but is 3 years old, though the scripts have all been maintained within the last 3 weeks. However - Cadence is not found in the KXStudio resources and the script errors out. Sad face. One day it might all come together - for now though, I just want to make music.

@ambientspace You can run VCV Rack (standalone) like this (from a shell script or with a .desktop file from your DE's/WM's launcher)
`/home/YOURUSER/.local/share/VCV/Rack2Pro` (this path may be different for your installation).
If you do not want to learn how to create a .desktop file to add VCV Rack to your launcher, use something like flathub.org/apps/io.github.fab
Enjoy your #linuxaudio jorney! 🤓

My #Linux journey continues. A couple of hours of noodling has #LinuxMint looking and feeling very comfortable. Installing #VCVRack required a little bit of 'sudo fu' and some permissions fun so that the #VST showed up in #BitwigStudio - I will need to figure out how to make an executable script to launch VCV Rack in standalone rather than using the command prompt, but that should not prove to be too daunting #LinuxAudio - and so I am ready to start digging into some #ElectronicMusicProduction

#LinuxAudio journey so far. I want to make #music on #Linux - it has not been an easy transitional process so far. I am now on my 4th iteration of #Ubuntu - this time with 25.04 (24.04 Studio was glitchy, 24.04.2 LTS would not install, 22.04 would not play audio from #Bitwig). Each iteration requires 2-4 hours to set up and test, but this is getting a little quicker with each cycle.

It has been challenging, but I am both stubborn and determined.

When speaking with #plugin vendors in relation to #linux support, I keep stumbling across #pace and #ilok and frankly I never liked iLok and would like to protect #linuxaudio from it. 🫣
What is your opinion on that?
Three providers have already told me that their plugins run on Linux without any problems, but that they can't move forward because PACE/iLok is not available for Linux. 🤔
