Last week we visited the monument that honors LATIN AMERICAN WORKERS
who helped rebuild New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. It’s important to remember that immigrants contribute to our communities in many ways, including their labor. I guarantee you nobody was was checking documentation back then. We needed help and we were fortunate to get it.

Today in Labor History April 13, 1873: The Colfax massacre, occurred in Colfax, Louisiana. A mob of former Confederate soldiers and current KKK members murdered 60-153 black militiamen after they surrendered. The militiamen were guarding the parish courthouse in the wake of the contested 1872 election for governor. Southern elections during Reconstruction were regularly marred by violence and fraud. It was the worst act of racist violence during Reconstruction.

Blue Cross authorized mastectomies and breast reconstructions for women with cancer but refused to pay the full doctors’ bills.

But the insurer did make some exceptions. On several occasions, Blue Cross executives signed deals to pay for their wives’ treatment.
