Wolfgang Viechtbauer<p>Kinda excited about some additions to the metafor package I am working on. Can now visualize the entire predictive distribution in a forest plot (in addition to showing the prediction interval itself).</p><p><a href="https://scholar.social/tags/RStats" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>RStats</span></a> <a href="https://scholar.social/tags/MetaAnalysis" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>MetaAnalysis</span></a> <a href="https://scholar.social/tags/metafor" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>metafor</span></a></p>

Wolfgang Viechtbauer<p>For those interested in meta-analysis and R (and in particular the metafor package):</p><p>I will do another special live stream on this topic on November 30th (6pm CET), where I will discuss in detail how to draw nice forest plots with the metafor package. Further details about my live streams here: <a href="https://www.wvbauer.com/doku.php/live_streams" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">wvbauer.com/doku.php/live_stre</span><span class="invisible">ams</span></a></p><p><a href="https://scholar.social/tags/RStats" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>RStats</span></a> <a href="https://scholar.social/tags/MetaAnalysis" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>MetaAnalysis</span></a> <a href="https://scholar.social/tags/metafor" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>metafor</span></a></p>
Wolfgang Viechtbauer<p>Quick reminder for those into R, statistics, and in particular meta-analysis:</p><p>On the 'Open Online R Stream' tonight (starting at 6pm CEST), I will talk about some of the recent updates to the metafor package. This will actually be the 100th stream, which in itself is a reason for some celebration.</p><p>Further details about these live streams can be found here: <a href="https://www.wvbauer.com/doku.php/live_streams" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">wvbauer.com/doku.php/live_stre</span><span class="invisible">ams</span></a></p><p><a href="https://scholar.social/tags/RStats" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>RStats</span></a> <a href="https://scholar.social/tags/Statistics" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Statistics</span></a> <a href="https://scholar.social/tags/MetaAnalysis" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>MetaAnalysis</span></a> <a href="https://scholar.social/tags/metafor" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>metafor</span></a></p>
Wolfgang Viechtbauer<p>1/ One of the things that has always bothered me about the forest() functions in the metafor package is the fact that the annotations (i.e., the numbers on the right) are by default not properly aligned. Here is a (purposefully exaggerated) example to illustrate the problem (the vertical gray lines are added to see this more clearly).</p><p><a href="https://scholar.social/tags/RStats" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>RStats</span></a> <a href="https://scholar.social/tags/MetaAnalysis" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>MetaAnalysis</span></a> <a href="https://scholar.social/tags/metafor" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>metafor</span></a> <a href="https://scholar.social/tags/Fonts" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Fonts</span></a> <a href="https://scholar.social/tags/Visualization" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Visualization</span></a></p>
Wolfgang Viechtbauer<p>1/3 I have given some love to the fsn() function in the metafor package. It can now calculate the 'fail-safe N' also under the assumptions of a random-effects model (using type="General"). This is a generalization of the methods by Orwin (1983) and Rosenberg (2005) (which are both based on the equal-effects model). See the documentation and some examples here:</p><p><a href="https://wviechtb.github.io/metafor/reference/fsn.html" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">wviechtb.github.io/metafor/ref</span><span class="invisible">erence/fsn.html</span></a></p><p><a href="https://scholar.social/tags/RStats" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>RStats</span></a> <a href="https://scholar.social/tags/MetaAnalysis" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>MetaAnalysis</span></a> <a href="https://scholar.social/tags/metafor" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>metafor</span></a></p>
Wolfgang Viechtbauer<p>Now in the (development) version of the metafor package: When setting setmfopt(theme="auto"), plots created by the package will adhere to the chosen RStudio theme for a nice and consistent look when working interactively.</p><p><a href="https://scholar.social/tags/RStats" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>RStats</span></a> <a href="https://scholar.social/tags/MetaAnalysis" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>MetaAnalysis</span></a> <a href="https://scholar.social/tags/metafor" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>metafor</span></a></p>
Wolfgang Viechtbauer<p>Working on a neat little feature in the metafor package so that plots created automatically respect the theme used in RStudio.</p><p><a href="https://scholar.social/tags/RStats" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>RStats</span></a> <a href="https://scholar.social/tags/metaanalysis" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>metaanalysis</span></a> <a href="https://scholar.social/tags/metafor" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>metafor</span></a></p>
Wolfgang Viechtbauer<p>New version of the metafor package is out (4.2-0).</p><p><a href="https://www.metafor-project.org/doku.php/news:news" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">metafor-project.org/doku.php/n</span><span class="invisible">ews:news</span></a></p><p>There were a few minor little buglets that annoyed me that I wanted to get rid of right away. Along the way, I made a few other improvements. The one I am most excited about is the possibility to create plots with a dark background and light colors. I prefer my IDE in dark mode, so creating a plot no longer feels like starring directly into the sun.</p><p><a href="https://scholar.social/tags/Rstats" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Rstats</span></a> <a href="https://scholar.social/tags/MetaAnalysis" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>MetaAnalysis</span></a> <a href="https://scholar.social/tags/metafor" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>metafor</span></a></p>
Wolfgang Viechtbauer<p>Since nobody asked for this, I have added the possibility to easily create dark mode plots of all the types of plots that can be created with the metafor package:</p><p><a href="https://wviechtb.github.io/metafor/reference/misc-options.html#dark-mode-for-plots" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">wviechtb.github.io/metafor/ref</span><span class="invisible">erence/misc-options.html#dark-mode-for-plots</span></a></p><p><a href="https://scholar.social/tags/R" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>R</span></a> <a href="https://scholar.social/tags/MetaAnalysis" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>MetaAnalysis</span></a> <a href="https://scholar.social/tags/metafor" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>metafor</span></a></p>
Wolfgang Viechtbauer<p>Just gave my talk about 'Location-scale models for meta-analysis using the metafor package' as part of the Evidence Synthesis &amp; Meta-Analysis in R Conference. The talk is part of this session:</p><p><a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2VBEE9k814I" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">youtube.com/watch?v=2VBEE9k814</span><span class="invisible">I</span></a></p><p>(my talk starts somewhere around 19:30, but you should watch the entire session - all really interesting talks!).
