Second stop on todays birthday outing was a visit to Stanley Mill.

It just so happened that this weekend is National Mill Weekend, so entry to the mill was free. Normally admission is £8.50 (walk in prices), I would say that is well worth it.

I have always wanted to visit the mill and today was ideal since we were nearby. A fascinating mill originally built in the 1780's that changed many times over the years, before finally closing in 1989.

The mill used the river Tay to help produce textiles - cotton. Mainly woman and children worked in the mill. The carding room was fascinating, this room would have been dusty, loud and hot to work in. The room had that "old, dusty fibre" smell to it. Pressing a button allowed you to hear how loud the carding room would be, mill workers created their own sign language as there would be no chance of holding a conversation over the noise.

An absolutely fascinating place to visit, I have so many more photos that I may or may not get round to sharing. Well worth a day out!
