The Creativity Hack No One Told You About: Read the Obits
Reading obituaries can boost creativity by exposing you to distant ideas, fueling the associations that lead to unexpected breakthroughs.

I'll testify to that.✋

I read them for the reasons they talk about in the article. 🙂 It's not morbid, but enlightening.

Okay this is interesting to me:
SciTechDaily: One Orbit, One Everest Lost: A #Planet Evaporates Into a 9-Million-Kilometer Tail
A planet 140 #lightyears away is rapidly disintegrating, shedding mineral-rich debris as it orbits its star *** in just 30.5 hours.*** Discovered by #MIT researchers via #NASA’s #TESS, it offers a rare chance to observe a planet evaporating in real time. Credit: SciTechDaily.com

Now that I think of it, Kendall changed wildly too, it was sleepy #MIT, and maybe some startups. Now it just feels like its been taken over by BioPharma concerns.

At least the #Kendall Band is still slightly functional, when thats gone, all is lost.

"New York Times bestselling author Cory Doctorow returns to the world of Red Team Blues to bring us the origin story of Martin Hench and the most powerful new tool for crime ever invented: the personal computer.

The year is 1986. The city is San Francisco. Here, Martin Hench will invent the forensic accountant — what a bounty hunter is to people, he is to money — but for now he’s an MIT dropout odd-jobbing his way around a city still reeling from the invention of a revolutionary new technology that will change everything about crime forever, one we now take completely for granted.

'Picks And Shovels' is a high-tech crime thriller about the “weird era of PCs” in the early 1980s, when Reaganomics, the tech industry, multilevel marketing, and the AIDS crisis all converged in San Francisco. "—Jacobin

Today I learned about the existence of MIT's giant flywheel, which reportedly has a right of way easement across Cambridge in case it ever falls off track and rolls into the sea. There would be no stopping it.

Also, I learned what a flywheel is.

Went to my first #MIT Flea today! Didn’t pick anything up but am glad to have a new (to me) local source of vintage music, video games, and pretty much anything else that’s even vaguely nerdy

They were quick to identify that Trump’s campaign didn’t really seem to be about fighting antisemitism @ all, but rather about using that fight as a justification for govt overreach. Roth, a historian & the pres. of #Wesleyan told The New Yorker, “Anti-antisemitism can be appropriated by any political movement. They can use that as a vehicle for persecuting researchers & institutions that are not aligned w/the ideology of the person in charge.”

The Forward · What Jewish university presidents say: Trump is exploiting campus antisemitism, not fighting itJewish presidents are actively defining what antisemitism actually is in the face of the Trump administration’s weaponization of the term

I love that #Harvard has taken a stand against the current administration and chosen not to fold their research efforts. Too much is at stake for the future of citizens of the US and globally. Their website profiles the work of Dr. David Walt. David and I shared a lab while at #MIT. He is a wonderful person and researcher. It is critical that his efforts, and those of scientists around the country, continue.

Here's a letter that I sent to Princeton University President Chris Eisgruber a few weeks ago urging the University to stand firm against the Trump administration's attempt to turn it into the Ivy version of the New College of Florida.

I'm pleased to see Harvard and MIT join the conflict.

Photonic computing needs more nonlinearity — #acoustics can help

Researchers from #MPL, @unihannover & #MIT demonstrate an all-optically controlled activation function using traveling sound waves. This optoacoustic approach enables nonlinear signal processing in the synthetic frequency dimension and could pave the way for more efficient, scalable optical neural networks — compact, fast, and energy-saving.
