I just had a post reported by "mastodon.online"

Which is odd because that is a domain, not a user, and there is nothing wrong with the post at all.

What is going on? Is this some new kind of spam?

@aubreyjones, I'm obviously going to dismiss this but can anyone tell me why there isn't a user who made this report? Why is it just the domain? It feels very OFF.

EDIT: I have learned that forwarded reports are anonymous.

How can this happen? Sometimes, accounts want to follow me that are completely empty, no posts, no communication (even not on their instance). But they have crazily many followers in a very short time. A new scam? Superfamous people under idiotic aliases? 22 K followers - most of them with 0 followers ! for a guy with an idiotic alias and a fake profile photo.

Okay, I want to take a moment to talk about toot-shaming behavior on Fedi. But first, I want to thank the person who blocked me for introducing me to the term "pornado"—I will cherish it.

So, there's a kind of reply-person on Fedi who seems to like to *vocally* use moderation tools. It's not enough to block or report someone, they have to loudly announce it, to rub it in. It's a "fuck you *slams door*" kind of response.

I typed out a paragraph defending my OP, but you can see for yourself, it's linked below.

While discussing where to take this post, my girlfriend pointed out that the behavior whiffs of the same thing I was talking about in my "doubt caltrops" post. It's a way of policing behavior that isn't against any rules, but that *they* find personally objectionable.

Just filter/block/report as necessary and move the fuck on.

Blanket-bans SUCK.

Over and over, I hear voices who demand bans on #socialmedia access for people below a certain age or general bans of social media.

Please stop thinking you can just ban the problem away. Think for example about the people who use social media as a safe space... the LGBTQ+ #kids and teens in some conservative hinterland who use social media to be able to connect to other #queer kids, which is impossible to do safely in public.
There is an undeniable, overproportional impact on marginalized communities.
That's just one example.

To solve the (anti-)social media issue, we need #education and #moderation, not generalized #bans for a certain group.

Trump fires #Democrat #FTC commissioners, presaging big #tech #policy shifts
Remaining #Republicans don't like the #righttorepair, #noncompete clause ban, or some #socialmedia #moderation
Is this legal? 1935 #SupremeCourt case, #HumphreysExecutor v. #US, may come into play here. Court ruled FTC commissioners could be removed for "inefficiency, neglect of duty, or malfeasance in office." The first two could be twisted to apply to anyone the #President doesn't like or want.

@anderseknert your case is a really interesting in terms of the moderation of the Fediverse. It's clearly a mistake and one of the moderators acknowledged that, spending a lot of their time to answer several people.

I see the tone in the moderation was not okay, it sounds moralistic, but one moderator also mentioned about this being a learning process, which, in fact, is. Anyone who has ever moderate an online community knows how difficult it can be. And any one who has being mistakenly moderated will definitely feel upset or angry.

From a general perspective, I wish this case can serve for us, as a collective in the Fediverse, think how to avoid such cases if malicious actors begin to falsely report misinformation, which can cause lots of unnecessary work for the moderators. And I have big concerns on the sustainability of the moderation in the Fediverse if we grew as much as Bluesky or any mainstream social media.
