Midnight Monsters: A Startled Moontinkifer
Do not be afraid. Like many night creatures, they just wish to be left alone. These secretive beings often hide in the shadows, except when the moon is full and bright. The midnight moon is their time of wonder and if you happen to be in the right place at the right time, you just may witness some magical happenings. This particular midnight monster is called Moontinkifer and can be found high up in the Balkan mountain range on the border between Bulgaria and eastern Serbia . It was not easy getting to this destination, but I have found it worth the effort, expense and skinned knees. Legend says that if one is lucky enough to spot them during the day, they appear as drab, colorless creatures, almost invisible against the mountain landscape of rocks and boulders. They shine (literally) at night when they come out of their hiding places to dance. Moonlight causes a shimmering transformation from dull gray to a luminous rainbow colored glow! It is believed that the glimmer of incandescent color and magical movements is their way of attracting a mate. Otherwise, they appear to be quite shy, non-aggressive individuals, who unfortunately, startle easily.

MeerKAT's radio image reveals the Milky Way's center, including Sgr A with its supermassive black hole. The vast 2-degree view details many celestial features, while JWST's inset probes star formation and magnetic fields. Optical telescopes can't see this due to dust.

That mid-day pause was also made by China's two rovers. Here on the Lunokhod 2 map the pause occurs near a crater called Zhanna (remember these are still informal names). Lunokhod 1's crater names were of actual men associated with the rovers. If that is true of these female names, Zhanna might refer to Zhanna Rodionova, a researcher at the Sternberg State Astronomical Institute, part of Lomonosov Moscow State University, a prominent planetary cartographer.

This is map 3 in my Lunokhod 2 sequence. It looks similar to the last one, but at about 5.4 km south a subtle texture change marks a break in slope as the land starts to rise into the hills (variously called 'Tangled Hills' or 'Oncoming Hills' in different maps). These are not steep slopes but the looser regolith offered poor wheel traction. At 3.95 km south the rover stops for 4 days over local noon when a lack of shadows makes driving difficult.

We're out again. :kirby_walk: Arwen is going slowly, so we're taking our time. There's no hurry, although sometimes I do need to move a bit... :ablobcatangel:
