Joe Steinbring 📷I took this in 2017 at Michigan Island Light station, along Apostle Islands National Lakeshore. Between 1886 and 1940 the Ashland docks were busy loading ore on boats bound for Chicago and Cleveland. Traffic in the South Channel and Chequamegon Bay was heavy. This important navigational aid required a lightkeeper and two assistants to keep the light, foghorns, and radio beacon operating. As shipping ceased so did the need for the station In 1941 the light was automated and the station closed after nearly 100 years of service. Presently, the light station is the site of seasonal tours conducted by volunteers, featuring a pair of lighthouses—one tall and one short.
