April 22nd, 2020 - the 50th anniversary of #EarthDay. Along with our “Let the Trees Rise” action (with @climatesavemovement and @extinctionrebellion ), where we hung placards on trees all over the Netherlands, a few of us went to Den Haag for a creative action. In the Netherlands, there is a tradition for those who turn 50, honoring that they have become old and wise enough to “see Sarah”; so we brought Sarah to our action in honor of the 50th anniversary of Earth day, along with the many reasons why we are fighting for system change. We also handed a letter to Mark Rutte, our prime minister, calling on him to listen to the 170 Dutch scientists pleading to the government to #ActNow. We cannot do this alone. 📸 @llieib #systemchangenow #climatecrisis #thisisademand #ifnotnowthenwhen #plantbasedfoodsystem #necessary #earthday

Because of the Puritan/Calvinist #work #ethics, so much #labor today is performative. Only a very small fraction of #productivity fulfills basic needs, but we must all appear #busy at work. So there are more #useless #tasks to be performed conspicuously and fill our #time. Because the work is not #necessary, it can include any amount of #bureaucracy and #politics and still fulfill its function as conspicuous labor. It also decouples labor and #value leading to alienation from work.

Sitting in the sunshine streaming in the window contemplating life on a more manageable level (because the world news is a bit... crazy awful) - what is my optional necessity in the food department?
Not a necessity necessity, like rice/potato/pasta etc, but quite optional, which gives me a slight sense of panic/urgency when it runs out.

Ginger root.

Do you have an optional necessity? You know, you don't need it, but you need it.

The Euroskeptic coalition that has kept the Tories in office since 2016 is beginning to crumble as the Brexit crisis, now nearly a decade old, drops down the list of British voters’ priorities.

With a general election likely to take place before the end of 2024, Labour leader #Keir #Starmer could be the next British prime minister. His party currently has a 20-point advantage over the Conservative Party in the polls.

Yet it’s not clear what type of #prime #minister Starmer would be, even three years into his tenure as party leader. He is an ambiguous figure:
a onetime #human #rights lawyer who took a #soft line on #police #brutality when he served as Britain’s top prosecutor and
a former #advocate of #integration with Europe who now insists that #Brexit was #necessary.
