Indeed in the end one errs on the side of persisting even the stuff one might ideally want to purge on reboot. I am planning using a <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/nixos" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>nixos</span></a> <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/flake" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>flake</span></a> arrangement with some <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/btrfs" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>btrfs</span></a> and <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/impermanence" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>impermanence</span></a> maintenance scripts but that makes it a bit of a babysitting process. I try to expose all error messages &amp; not ignore them so my flake system is going to be a babysitting process anyway &amp; more checks do not change the basic maintenance routine required. Will see.</p>

Rua<p>Meet Kiki! My Framework 12 laptop arrived just last week, to replace my aging Thinkpad X250. It's been a really nice laptop so far, and the installation and use has been very smooth. From first impressions I can absolutely recommend it.</p><p>I'm running NixOS on it, the same as on my desktop and my previous laptop. I named it "Kiki" because my desktop machine is "Xenia". The laptop has stylus support that I plan to do some doodling with, so naming it after the Krita mascot seemed very fitting!</p><p><a href="https://chitter.xyz/tags/Laptop" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Laptop</span></a> <a href="https://chitter.xyz/tags/FrameworkLaptop" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>FrameworkLaptop</span></a> <a href="https://chitter.xyz/tags/FrameworkLaptop12" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>FrameworkLaptop12</span></a> <a href="https://chitter.xyz/tags/NixOS" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>NixOS</span></a> <a href="https://chitter.xyz/tags/Fetch" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Fetch</span></a> <a href="https://chitter.xyz/tags/KikiTheCyberSquirrel" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>KikiTheCyberSquirrel</span></a> <a href="https://chitter.xyz/tags/Xenia" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Xenia</span></a></p>

Barry Schwartz 🫖<p>I suspect there is some potential breakage in NixOS in that shell scripts are shebanged with a fully dereferenced shell, and so the shell is called ‘bash’. But the shell behaves differently if it is called ‘bash’ than if it is called ‘sh’, and scripts typically expect the ‘sh’ behavior. Bash attempts to be more like a POSIX shell, I believe, if called ‘sh’.</p><p>Does someone know better than I?</p><p>Myself, I would make busybox sh the default shell for scripts, for POSIX adherence.</p><p><a href="https://masto.ai/tags/NixOS" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>NixOS</span></a></p>

Mike :nixos:<p>So confirmed. The <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/nixos" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>nixos</span></a> installer from about a month ago would automatically add in wl and broadcom_sta to the hardware config. </p><p>But the new installer won't do this. </p><p>Wondering if there is anyway to get this functionality back with a custom installer. </p><p>Id love <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/nixbook" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>nixbook</span></a> to be able to auto add the broadcom drivers regardless of how "insecure" they are.</p>
Mike :nixos:<p>Does anyone know if something changed in <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/nixos" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>nixos</span></a> recently?</p><p>Up until recently, when I installed NixOS on an older MacBook air (with broadcom), id have to use a USB wifi card to install,</p><p>But when I rebooted, the onboard one worked. </p><p>Now it doesn't work. The install works, but onboard wi-fi doesn't work. </p><p>What did I miss?</p>
Mike :nixos:<p>Why <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/apple" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>apple</span></a> ?!</p><p>Someone donated a 2018 MacBook air (which is newer than I usually get). And jumped through all the hoops to get it to boot to the <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/nixos" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>nixos</span></a> USB but even with a super modern kernel, the keyboard and trackpad don't work. </p><p>Anyone know a way around this? Obviously I can hook up an external. But, is there a way to get the internal stuff to work. </p><p>Will it pick it up after install?</p>
Klaus Frank<p>Ok, is there a list with what "everyone knows" is currently shit in <a href="https://chaos.social/tags/nixos" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>nixos</span></a>? </p><p>Since I got started I've now been informed about:<br>* discoverability is shit<br>* the onboarding experience is shit (and "it's not a secret" and everyone is aware of that)<br>* the documentation is shit<br>* the default configuration.nix that NixOS provides is "not that great"<br>* the "nix search" cli command is shit and one is supposed to use search.nixos.org instead<br>* wiki doesn't reflect examples used other where</p>
Erethon<p>Another week, another "This week in <a href="https://libretooth.gr/tags/nixos" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>nixos</span></a>" post about what piqued my interest <a href="https://blog.erethon.com/log/twin-34-2025/" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">blog.erethon.com/log/twin-34-2</span><span class="invisible">025/</span></a></p>
Klaus Frank<p>Also why is <a href="https://chaos.social/tags/nixos" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>nixos</span></a> downloading stuff AFTER writing the matching packages and printing a lot of cuda errors?!?</p><p>Those errors aren't shown when re-running the command though.</p>
Klaus Frank<p>Playing around with <a href="https://chaos.social/tags/nixos" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>nixos</span></a>, the wiki made this look way easier...</p><p>Using nixos so far has issues at places where I didn't expect to encounter any beforehand. Like I would never have guessed that finding the equivalent of "apk search" was so difficult.</p>
