Swaantje GüntzelThings the Golden Records (#Voyager) don´t show - or how I transmitted a sanitation truck into space long before ESAs Blue Danube Waltz

Golden Record / image No. 117

When I was an Artist-in-Science at the European Space Agency - ESA / ESOC in #Darmstadt in 2022 I mainly focussed on our waste culture and how we brought this culture into space (#orbitaldebris). At the same time, I also looked at how we have been turning a blind eye to the waste we produce for decades and continue to do so today. I found it extremely revealing to see that back in 1977, when #NASA made a selection of images to supply the data collection stored on the #GoldenRecords which were designed to inform possible #extraterrestials about the existence of the earth and its inhabitants, the images described many aspects of human existence, but left the reality of our modern life, such as the production of waste in large parts unnoticed.

Which is why I decided to change that and send an extra image into space to be understood as addition to the collection of the 116 diagrams and pictures generated by NASA in 1977 : On October 20th, 2022 the image of a sanitation truck (#JamaicaBay, #NY) from the year 1973 was uplinked through the tracking network of European Space Agency (#ESA) in the direction where the “Golden Records” attached to the NASA Voyager space probes are currently traveling in interstellar space.

We will now see what the extraterrestials will make of it. Swaantje GüntzelSPACE HEROINES (How to kick ass in space or The bias of AI)
5/13

Series of female super heroines who maintain law and order in the universe and fight against space debris. The work is conceived as a commentary on male-dominated space travel and of male-determined self-conceptions of space conquest. It was created in the context of an artist residency at European Space Agency (ESA/ESOC) in Darmstadt that Güntzel held in 2022. The works were generated using the open source DALL.E 2 AI from descriptions in natural language. Since then, Güntzel has continued to further develop the work, which simultaneously questions the biased practice of AI in which “heroines” are standardized as white, young, slender, mostly blond, scantily clad, over-sexualized women. More inclusive and diverse images emerged only when prompts explicitly contradicted these norms. Even then, the AI often failed to produce a more inclusive image or the results are so impaired that they are unusable (images that lacked colour, figures without faces, etc.). The series is more relevant than ever after Trump instructed NASA “‘to drop everything’ to scrub public sites of mentioning of DEI, indigenous people, environmental justice, and women in leadership” I had two of these bags produced and embroidered with the lettering “lunar litter only.” On May 23, 2023, one bag was sent to the HQ of NASA with the request that it be taken to the moon as part of the Artemis II mission, planned for 2025, to retrieve some of the 190 tons of material left behind by NASA during the Apollo missions.

You find all the objects that were left behind on the DoomsdaysCW
Are We Going to Mess Up Outer Space Too?

As nations jockey for military edge in orbit, there is a growing threat from above

by Daniel Munro Updated 8:49, Jun. 19, 2024

"Over the past decade, however, space has become much more contested and harder to govern. Nearly 1,000 private companies now offer space-based products and services. Expanding #SatelliteConstellations offer better internet access in remote and developing communities, enabling more people to access online health care, work remotely, and connect with family and friends. Space technologies also support better weather and climate monitoring, improve navigation and transportation logistics, and enhance agricultural productivity through the use of land- and water-quality sensors. All this has contributed to a space economy with an estimated value of $447 billion (US), on a trajectory to reach $1 trillion by 2030. And missions focused on exploration and scientific discovery are expanding—including the US-led Artemis program that aims to land human beings on the moon for the first time in over fifty years.

"But this new space age poses substantial risks. #OrbitalDebris from inactive satellites, discarded rocket parts, and anti-satellite #weapons tests threatens the infrastructure on which our social and economic well-being now depends, as well as the lives of astronauts working on space stations. In addition to the 30,000 objects large enough to track, there are an estimated 1 million debris fragments—between one and ten centimetres in diameter—that are too small to be picked up by ground-based radar and surveillance networks. Experts put the likelihood of future collisions between these objects at near certainty, with potential for cascading and catastrophic damage including entire satellite communication systems being taken out and larger debris fragments falling to #Earth and threatening lives and #ecosystems."

Read more:
https://thewalrus.ca/mess-up-outer-space/?utm_source=pocket-newtab-en-us

#DarkSkies #DarkSkiesForAll #KesslerSyndrome #SpaceX #SpacePollution #KesslerEffect #MegaConstellation
