Dr Micha Campbell<p>Quaternary science in the news! Coastal peat found in southern Western Australia dated to &gt;6 ka. Seems like a cool project involving Traditional Owners, archaeologists, and palaeoenvironmental scientists (including AQUA's president and manager of <a href="https://fediscience.org/tags/UNSW" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>UNSW</span></a> <a href="https://fediscience.org/tags/CHRONOS" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>CHRONOS</span></a> radiocarbon lab, Tim Barrows). </p><p><a href="https://fediscience.org/tags/AusQuaternary" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>AusQuaternary</span></a> <a href="https://fediscience.org/tags/palaeoenvironment" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>palaeoenvironment</span></a> <a href="https://fediscience.org/tags/peat" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>peat</span></a> <a href="https://fediscience.org/tags/Australia" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Australia</span></a> <a href="https://fediscience.org/tags/WesternAustralia" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>WesternAustralia</span></a>. </p><p><a href="https://www.abc.net.au/news/rural/2024-09-22/climate-change-wharton-beach-esperance-peat-bog/104152472" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">abc.net.au/news/rural/2024-09-</span><span class="invisible">22/climate-change-wharton-beach-esperance-peat-bog/104152472</span></a></p>
Dr Micha Campbell<p>The PhD student I'm co-supervising is visiting for a couple of weeks, and today I learned that trees can just move nutrients around themselves (and maybe metals?). They can just YOINK things out of their cells and send it to other needier cells! This is a big pivot from speleothems, where things tend to stay where they're put! Anyway, learning lots, trying not to be a shit supervisor, maybe succeeding? Prob too early to tell...</p><p><a href="https://fediscience.org/tags/dendrochronology" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>dendrochronology</span></a> <a href="https://fediscience.org/tags/dendrochemistry" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>dendrochemistry</span></a> <a href="https://fediscience.org/tags/palaeoenvironment" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>palaeoenvironment</span></a> <a href="https://fediscience.org/tags/academia" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>academia</span></a></p>
Dr Micha Campbell<p>Someone has kindly included me in an email chain about a pollen library. Very generous. And yet, one of my career aspirations is to NEVER have to spend time staring at pollen down a microscope. How does one say that politely?!</p><p><a href="https://fediscience.org/tags/pollen" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>pollen</span></a> <a href="https://fediscience.org/tags/palynology" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>palynology</span></a> <a href="https://fediscience.org/tags/microscopy" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>microscopy</span></a> <a href="https://fediscience.org/tags/palaeoscience" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>palaeoscience</span></a> <a href="https://fediscience.org/tags/palaeoenvironment" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>palaeoenvironment</span></a></p>

Sabhrina Aninta<p>"Strategies for biodiversity conservation and ecosystem restoration must acknowledge the long duration of human impacts and the degree to which ecological changes today differ from prehuman dynamics."</p><p>Loving the abstract's conclusions already! I think it is always important to see the bigger picture in everything. Easier to make everything relevant with bigger lens.</p><p><a href="https://www.sciencemag.org/lookup/doi/10.1126/science.abd6706" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">sciencemag.org/lookup/doi/10.1</span><span class="invisible">126/science.abd6706</span></a></p><p><a href="https://ecoevo.social/tags/biodiversity" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>biodiversity</span></a> <a href="https://ecoevo.social/tags/conservation" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>conservation</span></a> <a href="https://ecoevo.social/tags/archaeology" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>archaeology</span></a> <a href="https://ecoevo.social/tags/palaeobotany" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>palaeobotany</span></a> <a href="https://ecoevo.social/tags/palaeoenvironment" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>palaeoenvironment</span></a></p><p><a href="https://ecoevo.social/tags/SabhrinasReadings" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>SabhrinasReadings</span></a></p>
