Contrary to Bunyan’s current folk hero status, Hammitt Brown recalled that in the earliest tale written about him — 1906’s “Round River Drive” — Bunyan was “a jerk.” The story depicted Bunyan as a dishonest logger who tricked his men into taking logs around and around the same river so that he would never have to pay them.

WPR · Author chops down historic myths of Northwoods lumberjacksThere are many contradictory myths about Northwoods lumberjacks and the work they did in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. They were depicted as hard-living, violent men, but also as upstanding, conservation-minded gentlemen.

I am on vacation in Maine and have limited access to WiFi, so am browsing and posting less.

What I don't have limited access to is an abundance of Paul Bunyan fandom, like this giant statue in Bangor. They love this guy here. I always thought he was from further west!

I also have no shortage of Whoopie Pies. They LOVE those things here!

For #ThrowbackThursday I am going to bring back a long-standing debate I used to have with #AniTwitter for years: Is Paul Bunyan a #kaiju? And, if not, what is a good example of a "Western" kaiju?

Feel free to vote below on whether you believe Bunyan falls into that category and enter the debate afterwards! I'd love to hear opinions on the matter.
