Then there is the #Preparedness Strategy by the European Commission, urging all EU citizens to have an emergency kit at home and have stocks at home for at least 72 hours. Being prepared is not bad, I'd say, but IMHO this is far too individualist. Between the neighbours and local community we care for each other. That is lesson number one from such a crisis situation. You can never have everything you need at home, and mutual support and interdependence is vital.

It's well known that all national power grids are run on the brink of collapse. This is the way the grid systems have always worked. Any outage will need to be isolated as soon as possible to avoid a cascade failure of the whole grid (or grids, since many national grids are highly interconnected).

The recent #poweroutage is a great reminder that #preparedness is not a joke. You should have provisions and enough stockpile to manage at least 72 hours, preferably a week in a pinch.

SCIENCE IS REAL
NOAA WEATHER RADIO IS THE BEST

Known as the "Voice of NOAA's National Weather Service," NWR is provided as a public service by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), part of the Department of Commerce. NWR includes more than 1000 transmitters, covering all 50 states, adjacent coastal waters, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and the U.S. Pacific Territories. NWR requires a special radio receiver or scanner capable of picking up the signal. Broadcasts are found in the VHF public service band at these seven frequencies (MHz):

Someone shoot the whole #IoT 😅 In view of the #preparedness Union Strategy (eeas.europa.eu/eeas/preparedne ) and its local implementation I’ve made some elementary prep and went on a search of battery-powered (bonus if solar-powered*) #radio. This is surprisingly difficult to find, but one can get radio-controlled robotic window cleaning sponges, IoT thermometers to track ovulation, WiFi-controlled egg cookers and LED candles with remotely controlled, scheduled scent release and a hygrometer linked to your Apple Watch.

* this is admittedly of limited use in NL unless the radio has a very large surface area, which technically makes it an antenna? Might end up doubling as a radiotelescope by accident, definitely a win

EEASPreparedness Union Strategy: reinforcing Europe’s resilience in a changing worldTo ensure the sustainable security and welfare of its citizens, the European Union is proposing additional measures, under the Preparedness Union Strategy, to better anticipate, prevent, and respond to a range of risks and threats, including cyberattacks, sabotage and disinformation campaigns and the impact of climate change.
