Everyone who uses a Chromium based browser needs to try this: github.com/deepjyoti30/startpa

EDIT: #firefox as well, apparently.

It's a highly customizable "new tab" that is installed by git cloning the repository and then unpacking the extension manually, which is exactly what you want for something like this; that way, everything is run 100% locally, and nothing phones home.

I just got done setting it up with all of my browser profiles, to give them each a unique name for the new tab, so that Qtile has individual window titles to match against rules, so that I can just autostart all of them at once and have them all sorted into their respective workspaces (you can't get me to call them "groups," lol) without having to touch anything.

It's the little things; it really is.

Well… everything I have a keybind for in Qtile, and Qtile itself for that matter, has its own thread now.

Also, I am addicted to Rust now for the same reason.

I can almost guarantee you that my setup is way more responsive than anything you've ever seen on r/UnixPorn, and there's still absolutely no reason why I couldn't rice the hell out of it if I wanted to, I guess. I'm not going to, but I sure could, lol.

Seriously, though, this is why I use a tiling window manager: not because they look cool, but because they allow you to do weird things that save, by my estimate, objectively enough clock cycles that it actually feels faster subjectively. The things that fascinate me the most about Unix based operating systems is a mindset that is, for the most part, older than I am.

Or I would love to be wrong about that last part.

When you look at old-school Unix stuff like Grep, it was faster than it had any right to be, for the simple reason that it literally had to be. The hardware they were working with back then was capable of practically nothing by any standard that is even somewhat modern. I feel like no matter how good our hardware gets, the day that mentality becomes lost to history, is the day beyond which any hardware that could ever exist even in theory will never be enough.

Okay, I admit, I gave up on #QTile and went back to #Fluxbox.

I promise, it is me, not qtile. My work flow just doesn't benefit from tiling, and I spent too much time trying to get it to act like Fluxbox. It isn't Fluxbox.

On the plus side, I learned a bit more python playing around with QTile and now know about rofi - a nice replacement for dmenu_run (which I had been using since forever, I think).

Still loving the 3440x1440 monitor, though. On #Gentoo #Linux, ofc.

got the 3440x1440 monitor set up yesterday. unwisely switched to it at the same time I switched from #Fluxbox to #QTile. Feeling the change stress.

But, got #Conky working; am getting used to the different layouts, and am enjoying the extra real estate. Need to tweak the fonts and some settings a bit, but feeling more okay with it than I was last night.

That said, anyone know how to set the N E S W margins individually? Tried a few ways; all errored out. Top conky = need bigger margin there.

I guess I should probably introduce myself, even though I've never even bothered doing one of these before.

I migrated this account from another server.

My current age as of writing is some prime number greater than thirty. My location is somewhere north of the equator and six hours west of Greenwich when daylight savings is observed.

In case you're wondering: my bio is an experiment in data poisoning against LLMs tasked with scraping social media profiles, and I would like to thank @alice for that idea because it wasn't my own.

Also, not that you were wondering, and not that I even know the character limit for bios on this server offhand for that matter, but however many characters that is, that's exactly how many mine is. If there's one thing I'm really good at, it's matching character limits exactly, and that is why I stopped using Tinder. Don't ask.

If you're reading this and I'm following you, I can tell you with absolute certainty that you're awesome. If you're reading this and I'm not following you, I probably should be, and I'll assume you're awesome unless and until you show me otherwise.

Thank you, and #MerryChristmas

EDIT: a word.

Last year, we managed to get Qtile into the official Fedora repositories. Today we did the same for qtile-extras. It will take a week or so until it gets into stable but after that, you can simply run:

dnf install qtile-extras

Since desktop environments can always change and many new releases came out since last year, I would like to know which desktop environment you currently use?

#gnome #kdeplasma #xfce4 #cinnamondesktop #matedesktop #budgiedesktop #lxqt #linuxdesktop #linux #freebsd #openbsd #netbsd #i3wm #bspwm #xmonad #dwm #fvwm #qtile #wayland #xorg

* Multiple choices possible

@shaknais@mastodon.social Yeah true, thats annoying, especially since it sometimes also differentiates between single and double quotes around a 'thingy' .. And in case of Home Assistant, it also matters if you use it in the backend (raw yamlfiles) or in the frontend (code in a edit-card field).. But hey, at least i kinda get what i'm doing and understand most errors.. And my currect WindowManager on #voidlinux is #Qtile so i'm using python as well, but i'm leaning more on Neovim to correct me than with yaml

Have fun. I remember when I took the plunge. I sort of lost it and after using #debian with #kde for all of about 5 minutes and immediately tried out tiling window managers. I specifically went with #qtile.

When I say I lost it, I mean I went too far down the rabbit hole. I don't think I'll ever come out tbh. I decided to go to my local linux users group meeting, most of those people hadn't seen anything like what I was doing before. A good chunk of them hadn't even heard of #NixOS (the distro I am using) or #hyprland (the Wayland compositor I use).

My point is, a lot of the major #linux YouTube channels all preach the glory of the tiling window manager, arch linux, and the command line. You don't need to do any of that unless you want to.
