David Wilkins<p>One curiosity of Land Rover’s range in the 2000s was that after years of developing cars on a shoestring, the company came up with two completely different sophisticated platforms for the similarly sized L322 Range Rover and Discovery 3. A further curiosity was that under the skin, the first Range Rover Sport was a Discovery rather than a Rangie, in the sense that it used the Disco’s T5 architecture. David Wilkins<p>Yesterday’s second-generation P38a model, the ‘forgotten Range Rover’, had a comparatively short life before being replaced by the all-new L322 in 2002, which, with its unibody construction and all-round independent suspension, was far more modern under the skin. Engines and electrics came originally from BMW. The project was inherited by Ford, which later replaced these with Jaguar/Ford systems. David Wilkins<p>A few days ago, I was saying how the heavily revised post-1983 standard Land Rover (later Defender) borrowed its updated suspension and transmission from the original Range Rover. This was possible because of the under-the-skin similarities between the two vehicles, in particular their ladder frame chassis - although the wheelbases were different.
