I am running #PhotoPrism on a Raspberry Pi 5 with 8GB of RAM, using a 1TB SSD as the main and only drive, using the Pimoroni NVMe Base.

So far, I could not properly measure the performance, because I don’t know how to do it, but I am satisfied! Yet, this is definitely not a future-proof solution, since I need way more storage: I still haven’t imported most of my pictures there, and I need to prepare for plenty more to come.

The simplest (yet quite pricey, 261£) option would be to get a Pimoroni NVMe Duo and maximize it with a total of 4TB NVMe SSDs.

I think this is not optimal, though, and probably I could be spending all that money much better… Do you have any advice?

The thing about hosting a personal media gallery is that it requires a lot of resources when indexing the pictures (so only when you add new ones), then it’s super light—correct me if I am wrong, @photoprism. Hence, I’m thinking the best would be an extensible solution where I can add many HDDs and SSDs, without being forced to pump up the other specs too. I would probably be using just one NVMe SSD for the software and the database, and then save everything else in high-performance HDDs, since they are getting cheap and I can get much more storage with less money—of course I am performing a daily backup off-site, as they are more likely to fail, too.

If I am 100% sure that whatever I end up choosing will be solid for many years to come, I am willing to consider spending a bit more on it.

Gatvol (fedup) that my Zigbee Dongle still interferes with the WiFi on my Raspberry Pi 4B using Home Assistant, although I bought the extension cable and wrapped the USB SSD-housing and cables in tin-foil 🤣, I finally caved. But, as you can imagine, that had a knock-on effect, mmmmh... But, now I am excited and can't wait for the delivery to arrive... #gatvol #RaspberryPi #RaspberryPi4B #RaspberryPi5 #HomeAssistant #SouthAfrica pishop.co.za/store/raspberry-p

My Pets - Never need to taken out to do their business, don't need to be fed, never make a mess while I'm away...BUT they do demand I teach them something way too often.

TurtleBot5-WaLI (Wallfollower Looking For Intelligence) is running ROS2 Jazzy, and HumbleDave2 (Just Dave) is running ROS2 Humble Hawksbill.

TB5-Wali has been "alive" for 2056 hours since Jan 9, 2025.

HumbleDave2 has self docked 1283 times in his four years of life to date.

Lately I've been doing more #SelfHosting again due to the current situation. Of course, I'm paying particular attention to power consumption and noise. After good experiences with the #ARM64 architecture, even with power-hungry applications such as Mastodon, I'm now using the smartphone technology for my homeservers, too.

There are #SBCs with more open hardware, but the #RaspberryPi is widely available, well documented, powerful and inexpensive. And it is available with up to 16 GB of RAM.

Anyone operating a server on the Internet must install #security updates quickly. However, many people forget to restart running software so that the new version runs instead of the old one. The #needrestart tool helps with this on Debian-based Linux systems, which unfortunately is usually not pre-installed.

On my Raspberry Pi 4, needrestart always runs correctly (automatically after apt upgrade). On my Raspberry Pi 5, however, I first had to create a configuration file as described by the main developer here:
github.com/liske/needrestart/b
Previously, the tool always claimed that a reboot was necessary because it thought an outdated Linux kernel was running.

Next, I want to activate #LUKS hard drive encryption on both raspis. Unfortunately, this is not as easy under #Raspbian or #RaspberryPiOS as on other Debian systems. If you have managed this: Please let me know how you did it!

So how am I supposed to reduce power consumption when not using our #LibreELEC setup on #RPi? 🤔

I do have Shelly Plug S available but I guess that I'd need a remote shutdown command before turning off power. Furthermore: how do I enable auto-boot when power resumes?

Any ideas?

Robot Reincarnation Is Real

The #RaspberryPi5 powering my GoPi5Go-Dave #robot blew its I2C bus "out of the blue". He no longer managed his battery level and died.

Robot Dave first existed as "Humble Dave" from 2021 to 2023, and was reincarnated as "GoPi5Go-Dave from 2023 to 2025.

Again reincarnated, #Pi4 #GoPiGo3 #ROS2 "Humble Dave2" is alive on his dock, awaiting further #Python enlightenment.

Special thanks to @CleoQc of #ModularRobotics for putting Dave back on the straight and narrow.

Running #meshchat , four #liion #21700 5000 mAh batteries seem to run the #rak4631 and Pi for at least 24 hours. The device can be re-charged using #usbc or 9 to 18 V DC at up to 3 A via a jack or other connector. The rnode shuts down cleanly when batteries run out & re-starts when power is back, whereupon the batteries charge at the same time in #passthroughcharging

But this time I was finally ready - I received this large universal reballing stencil from AliExpress where the first 18x18 option fits the RP1 perfectly.

So instead of reflowing again I just took it off the board, reballed and soldered nicely.

After letting it cool down for 10 minutes next to an open window it works as it should now 👍.

I just run two (TWO) commands in my #RaspberryPi, and in 4 (FOUR) minutes I got the latest major version of the awesome @photoprism running smoothly, no issues. This is the result of wise and professional work that prioritizes stability and bug fixing over fancy breaking features. Move fast, break things Go slow, fix everything.

Thank you so much to all PhotoPrism contributors for all this! Long live self-hosted photo management software!

Own your own data, own your own pictures, own your own videos! #PhotoPrism makes it incredibly easy and fun, too!
