#Science #Relation (#SR) - #public #relations #services for #science #professionals

Every self-respecting commercial enterprise engages in “public relations” (#PR). However, it is precisely this “public relation” that the #scientific #community lacks in order to raise its profile in the #media and gain #general #recognition. So how about public relations work in the form of “science relations” (SR) for you as a #scientist?

A quotation from Bertrand Russell

The root of the trouble springs from too much emphasis upon competitive success as the main source of happiness. I do not deny that the feeling of success makes it easier to enjoy life. A painter, let us say, who has been obscure throughout his youth, is likely to become happier if his talent wins recognition. Nor do I deny that money, up to a certain point, is very capable of increasing happiness; beyond that point, I do not think it does so. What I do maintain is that success can only be one ingredient in happiness, and is too dearly purchased if all the other ingredients have been sacrificed to obtain it.

Bertrand Russell (1872-1970) English mathematician and philosopher
Conquest of Happiness, Part 1, ch. 3 “Competition” (1930)

Unfinished business

"A shameful death after a supermarket scuffle shines a light on Australia’s unfinished business. From compensation for the Stolen Generations to Indigenous recognition, Australia must follow words with actions."

"There is unfinished business in this country, and there can be no excuses for not knowing or understanding. We need to change direction and remove the burden from the most vulnerable."

"In a land of home improvers surely the principle of fixing the foundations first if you want to really close the gaps is obvious."

Live #FacialRecognition cameras may become ‘commonplace’ as police use soars

The expansion comes despite #facial #recognition failing to be referenced in any act of parliament.

Campaigners claim the #police have been allowed to “self regulate” their use of the technology.

Officers have in the past used a setting that was subsequently shown to disproportionately misidentify black people.

The Guardian · Live facial recognition cameras may become ‘commonplace’ as police use soarsBy Daniel Boffey

I would like to thank @rebeccawatson for pinpointing straight away the central issue when it comes to these #recognition technologies. Too often, we are first concerned with the impact it might have on our lives, but we completely forget about the hundreds of millions of #clickworkers, exploited through a #digital #gigeconomy and what these system reflect of the deeper #techbro ideologies such as #technofascism and #mass-surveillance of all those who are not the #CEO‘s.
