Museum of Portable Sound

Originally written in the 8th Cent CE by Spanish monk Beatus of Liébana (730–785CE), the Commentary on the Apocalypse was copied & illuminated in 1091-1109CE to include this depiction of cosmic silence as a yellow rectangle.

This entire manuscript, created at Santo Domingo de Silos in the province of Burgos, Spain, is held by @britishlibrary

Cropped detail of a pieced of aged parchment. At the top, a handwritten headline in red ink reads, in Latin: 'factum est silencium in celo' ('there was silence in heaven'). Below that, a yellow rectangle is outlined in a thin black rule. At each of its four corners emerges a black leaf-shaped pointer pointing at 45 degrees away from the rectangle. Emerging out of the two short sides of the rectangle are a series of short black lines, in groups of six, that seem to indicate glowing or vibration.
The entire manuscript page that the yellow rectangle detail has been cropped out of. It contains two columns of hand-written text in mostly black ink with some letters in red. The yellow rectangle is at the very top right of the page, a verso, that is tipped into the binding immediately to the right.
