"Stone City, Iowa," Grant Wood, 1930.
Wood (1891-1942) was THE great American Regionalist painter. He's best known for "American Gothic" but so much else he did is worth looking at.
This painting of an idyllic village is actually a depiction of a town in transition. Stone City had been founded as a company town for a limestone quarry, but the limestone business declined with the rise of Portland cement, so the town shrank and shifted into agriculture. This is a fairly idealized scene showing the town now in harmony with its environment, and a place where Wood established an art colony for a couple of years.
Looks like the perfect landscape for an autumn drive...

#Linguistics question! I have an older relative - who would have grown up in Nova Scotia in the late 1940s and through the 1950s. I don't know if it's a generational thing, or a #regionalism, or what, but he uses a term I've never heard anyone else use. Might be only one tiny area; little towns were pretty isolated back then.
#Screws - i.e. hardware you drive into #wood etc - he calls "#screwnails".
Anyone else ever hear them referred to this way?
As part of my work on international intellectual property, I have just published an article on The Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership: intellectual property and trade in the Asia-Pacific in the Asia Pacific Law Review https://lnkd.in/e2ME9G9p The work draws on my experience of engaging with the policy process over #RCEP in the #JSCOT committee in the Australian Parliament. #RCEP #trade #IP #Asia #Pacific #regionalism Cf #TPP #TPPA #CPTPP #BRI #openaccess #auslaw #auspol
Out of non-rigorous scientific curiosity, ( it's not a random sampling after all!) what do you call the part you either park you car on or drive into garage beside your house called? Please Ottawa only for now.

The digital copyright regime established in the last three decades contributes to #climateheating as it produces a centralized "Super-Highway" internet infrastructure and prevents #regionalism .... Most digital goods could be available from some nearby 10ks of devices, with some local high storage mixed in, if we had further developed the already existing p2p tech that existed 15 years ago. Instead we got YouTube, Spotify and Netflix and the writers guild going on #strike ...
"Carry-in" is another word for a potluck. I read on a website once that this word is a #regionalism centered in southern #Illinois, southern #Indiana, and southern #Ohio.
It was very common where I grew up, but I've met plenty of people who have never heard of the word. Have you?
@hollybrigstocke @financialtimes #Regionalism has a strong & plausible attraction for security - the EU is a good (if uneven) example - #autarky even for medium sized countries has often been unworkable even in the medium term...
of course (as you would likely expect me to say) this is yet more evidence that #Brexit was a myopic & wrong-headed response to UK's ongoing problems
