AI6YR Ben<p>Welting sewn, all attached to cushions cushions reattached. <a href="https://m.ai6yr.org/tags/diy" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>diy</span></a> <a href="https://m.ai6yr.org/tags/reupholstering" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>reupholstering</span></a> <a href="https://m.ai6yr.org/tags/furniture" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>furniture</span></a> <a href="https://m.ai6yr.org/tags/Eames" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Eames</span></a></p>
AI6YR Ben<p>My reupholstering project continues. Welting required for these, then they can be resecured in place... then on to the arms. <a href="https://m.ai6yr.org/tags/diy" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>diy</span></a> <a href="https://m.ai6yr.org/tags/reupholstering" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>reupholstering</span></a></p>
AI6YR Ben<p>Getting closer. Learning things.... 1. Could have gone for a softer foam, got what people were recommending for Eames restorations, but this is NOT an Eames. It will be fine, but there is a difference. That is why the buttons aren't making the same pressure pattern...</p><p>2. Snap buttons don't work. Just sewing vinyl over the old ones and a couple of those, works a lot better.</p><p>3. Head foam needs to be recut, too lumpy. Really would have been easier to buy thinner foam to match the middle and head sections. Trying to trim foam thinner is problematic. Bought 5 inch foam to match the seat, but need 2 inch foam for the middle and top. </p><p><a href="https://m.ai6yr.org/tags/diy" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>diy</span></a> <a href="https://m.ai6yr.org/tags/furniture" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>furniture</span></a> <a href="https://m.ai6yr.org/tags/reupholstering" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>reupholstering</span></a></p>
AI6YR Ben<p>Started to work on the chair cushions. Not done yet. Shaping the foam was a little harder than I thought. Attempted to pull the buttons enough to cause creases, but doesn't look very successful. (Can try those again of course). And I have a ton of excess material on back after stretching which I need to trim... the vinyl is REALLY stretchy. <a href="https://m.ai6yr.org/tags/reupholstering" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>reupholstering</span></a> <a href="https://m.ai6yr.org/tags/diy" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>diy</span></a> <a href="https://m.ai6yr.org/tags/project" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>project</span></a> <a href="https://m.ai6yr.org/tags/furniture" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>furniture</span></a></p>
AI6YR Ben<p>Next is pulling all the edging and removing all the staples. This can be a PITA. But I determined that instead of a staple remover or pliers, the edge of a small pocketnife pried the staples off the easiest. <a href="https://m.ai6yr.org/tags/diy" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>diy</span></a> <a href="https://m.ai6yr.org/tags/reupholstering" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>reupholstering</span></a> <a href="https://m.ai6yr.org/tags/furniture" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>furniture</span></a></p>
infryq<p>Finished! Here are the grey ones in their new home at the jewelry workshop, and the most-finished photo I took of the leather one, before I buffed out the water marks. Client is delighted and I got a cool tour of all their machines.</p><p>I’m gonna give it a few months to be less Tired Of Chairs and then propose teaching these as a basic-upholstery class. We’ve still got piles of the old nasty ones just waiting for someone to give them a new life!</p><p><a href="https://sunny.garden/tags/reupholstering" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>reupholstering</span></a></p>
AI6YR Ben<p>Ooh, this reupholstering will be doable for sure. The beading on this is just stapled on the edge of the cushions. And everything is screwed together with wood screws. Need to acquire foam. The stuff in here is actually quite terrible and cheap. Thin cheap vinyl. Also have to figure out buttons. 🤔<a href="https://m.ai6yr.org/tags/reupholstering" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>reupholstering</span></a> <a href="https://m.ai6yr.org/tags/diy" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>diy</span></a> <a href="https://m.ai6yr.org/tags/project" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>project</span></a></p>
AI6YR Ben<p>The whole purpose of this machine is actually to reupholster this Eames knockoff chair. 1970's era. It has seen better days. I salvaged this for free off the side of the road in the trash when it had just one small tear in it. Now, it is falling apart. <a href="https://m.ai6yr.org/tags/reupholstering" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>reupholstering</span></a> <a href="https://m.ai6yr.org/tags/furniture" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>furniture</span></a></p>
AI6YR Ben<p>Someday, I have to reupholster this chair (it's in worse condition now... fake leather splitting). The bunny is a lot older ;-)</p><p>Anyone around here ever try reupholstering a fake Eames chair? Curious how hard it is. (I know another MCM chair I have apparently cannot be reupholstered, because it is held together with glue and parts that break if you try to take it all apart) </p><p>ps. I paid $0.00 for this chair, it was out on the curb for trash day and I threw it in my truck.</p><p><a href="https://m.ai6yr.org/tags/furniture" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>furniture</span></a> <a href="https://m.ai6yr.org/tags/reupholstering" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>reupholstering</span></a> <a href="https://m.ai6yr.org/tags/diy" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>diy</span></a></p>
infryq<p>New instance, new <a href="https://sunny.garden/tags/introduction" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>introduction</span></a>!</p><p>Hello I'm Katie, and I like to practice making things. These days most of that goes into volunteering at <a href="https://sunny.garden/tags/protohaven" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>protohaven</span></a>, a maker space in <a href="https://sunny.garden/tags/pittsburgh" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>pittsburgh</span></a>, PA, where I'm using my comfort in the textiles area to boost me up into everything else (latest discovery: table saws are awesome). Currently in progress: a sheet metal and plasma cutter project to enhance my fabric stash storage; refurbishing a 1912 treadle Singer <a href="https://sunny.garden/tags/sewing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>sewing</span></a> machine; and <a href="https://sunny.garden/tags/reupholstering" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>reupholstering</span></a> as many shitty techshop drafting/bar stools as I can before my attention span runs out. I'm a garment sewist but I've never really got along with commercial patterns. I live in a house over a hundred twenty years old and enjoy <a href="https://sunny.garden/tags/repair" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>repair</span></a> in the spirit of that era.
