For any folks still out there using the #Rockbox firmware, I recently discovered the Hifi Walker H2 which is both officially supported, and more importantly, still being manufactured and sold. Flashing takes a bit of patience if you're #blind, but it can be done.

WOAH
»The Rockbox project is pleased to announce the immediate availability of Rockbox 4.0. This marks our first release since November 2019, and since then we've been busy adding features and fixing bugs to give you the best Rockbox experience yet.«
I fixed it for now by shifting the balance +12% to the right in Rockbox. Others on Reddit have reported the same issue, some with the right side being louder instead. These flex cables on 18-year-old devices (even the replacements are NOS) are kind of a lottery.
If I lose my mind over it, I might try a reflow, but since I can’t fix this in the original firmware, I’m twice as happy I installed Rockbox.
My favorite offline music player - a Sansa C200 with wired earbuds, running Rockbox firmware.
whilst the 20 year old #iPod with #rockbox is pretty decent, it's ui is showing its age. I'm working on going back to an offline #music collection and now I'm trying to decide between getting a budget #DAP or picking up a #DAC dongle to use on my phone (and maybe computer).
The tempotec offerings look decent for entry level stuff that might be compatible with my terrible hearing.
I'd also like to get the wireless porta pros. I bought the wired ones on accident. They work with my bt xceiver tho
@esden @jacqueline @buzzyrobin @ailurux @ErinRose yeah, I guess #RockBox and #USBc are easy to do, but #Apple does have tight control on the #Clickwheel design...
Thx m8!
@esden @jacqueline @buzzyrobin @ailurux @ErinRose cool.
Does it come with #USBc, #Clickwheel and #RockBox as #Firmware?
Sometimes i believed in the legend of "convergence": one device to rule them all and forever bind them.
Since i use a #pinephone and reposessed a personal computing environment that is frugal and tailored to my needs, i am completely re-considering.
Got myself a "modern" device to run #Rockbox on (https://www.rockbox.org/). and OH MY! 1/ how much it progressed since the last 15y i didnt use it! 2/ how amazing to have dedicated, reliable top-notch audio sw+hw!
Sometimes i leave "phone" at home.
@chiefgyk3d Whoa, that looks so good! I've been rocking a Surfans F20, because I just can't leave behind #Rockbox. I just love that software, though development has significantly slowed in the last decade.
Not quite #SidewalkTreasure, someone in my town was giving away a Sansa Clip+. No repairs needed, it works perfectly. It's the most recent dedicated music player I've ever owned, what I think of as being of the last generation of music players before everything moved to phones.
The device is incredibly small. 8 GB of onboard storage, it can take microSD cards up to at least 256 GB. I've already installed #Rockbox (https://www.rockbox.org/) on it.

why is #MP3 still such a common music format/codec?
It seems audiophiles 'just' use FLAC (from 2001), while AAC is used in streaming, etc.
I just thought there might've been some development in the past 20 years now that I want to encode some stuff for my #iPod with or without #Rockbox.
(Yes, I'm like that when it comes to formats, I want a #JpegXL sticker)
I get the decision not to start #Tangara on #Rockbox, but no-one is stopping third party development. And I hope that s.o. will be tempted, as my personal playback use doesn't work well with OSs targeting playing and indexing music files. I prefer file systems and playlists.
Personally I still use my Rockbox Players a lot - as recorders, because the Iriver H120 has digital optical input/output and does bit perfect recordings and the iPod Nano as a sports player.
If you followed along with the #iPodUpgrade thread at the weekend, you know I was going to install #Rockbox on it.
Well. I did eventually.
Frustratingly, the Linux installer wouldn't get past the "downloading updates" message so I couldn't use it :-(
Had to resort to my Windows laptop where everything went smoothly.
