very excited to have @jelabra here in Maastricht since Tuesday evening. Yesterday he was opponent in Ammar's PhD defense and he give presentation in the mini symposium in the afternoon, and right now we're looking into his new Rudof tool

Tomorrow, we will dive deeper into ontologies with OWL, the Web Ontology Language. However, I'm doing OWL-lectures now for almost 20 years - and OWL as well as the lecture haven't changed much. So, I'm afraid I'm going to surprise/dissapoint the students tomorrow, when I will switch off the presentation and start improvising a random OWL ontology with them on the blackboard ;-)

In today's ISE 2025 lecture,, we will introduce SPARQL as a query language for knowledge graphs. Again, I'm trying out 'Dystopian Novels' as example knowledge graph playground. Let's see, if the students might know any of them. Wtat do you think? ;-)

Back in the lecture hall again after two exciting weeks of #ESWC2025 and #ISWS2025. This morning, we introduced our students to RDF, RDFS, RDF Inferencing, and RDF Reification.

It's a wrap! ISWS 2025 was a huge success! 60 wonderful students, 5 brilliant assistant tutors, 11 extraordinary tutors, 3 magnificent keynoters, and 2 visionary & unassuming directors. We've had a great time together with all of you and hope, you've had a safe trip home!

Good morning ISWS 2025! It's day 04 of the summer school. Today, we are working on our research tasks and will have a relaxing afternoon at the swimming pool before we will be chasing deadlines tomorrow :)
Graffitti along the road downhill from Bertinoro castle taken while coming back from the daily morning run. Love & passion ;-)
Was Michelangelo really a turtle?
This question will be solved by the research task force of @lysander07 who is presenting this LLM question answering and Information Extraction task, in which the reliability of LLMs applied on historical documents will be analysed.
Aidan Hogan from University of Chile is introducing the ISWS 2025 students to (large) knowledge graphs and is asking to extend Wikidata by adding all our profiles to it.
The first ISWS 2025 Tutorial Session is on "Reasoning in Large Knowledge Graphs". Valentina Presutti is announcing Aidan Hogan from University of Chile, Santiago de Chile, as first speaker.
"Ceci n'est pas sémantic"
Frank van Harmelen is alluding to the famous Réné Magritte painting "Ceci n'est pas une pipe" pointing out the the knowledge graphs we are using frequently don't carry any semantics at all, but are only "nicely" structured graphs.
LLMs are starving for knowledge graphs. Raphael Troncy was pointing out that many LLM company crawlers are constantly visiting their KGs. Some crawlers even perform explicit SPARQL queries on the KGs.
In his keynote, Raphael Troncy is asking whether we should keep building knowledge graphs....taking into account 20 years of experience in building knowledge graphs

Post workshop refreshment out on the roof terrace...
The SemDH 2025 received lots of positive feedback from all of the people I spoke with. Very well done and kudos to the organising team: @tabea @srush_nlp Arianna Graciotti and Bruno Sartini! Looking forward to the workshop dinner tonight

Excellent keynote in the #SemDH2025 workshop by Laura Hollink on Cultural Bias in Linked Open Data. Laura is addressing all bias related aspects in cultural heritage items itself, in the data representing it, the data schemata, vocabularies, and ontologies on which the data are based, as well as in the knowledge representation languages used to create the schemata.

"Learn how to see. Realize that everything connects to everything else", but how to do this with Linked Data? Eero Hyvönen is quoting Leonardo Da Vinci as an intro to his presentation "How to Create a Portal for Digital Humanities Research Using a Linked Open Data Cloud of Cultural Heritage Knowledge Graphs: Case SampoSampo"

Yes, we also have a running group in the mornings. But beware, Bertinoro lies in beautiful Emilia Romagna....and this also means "hills" to climb ;-)

What does it mean "to know" something? Have you ever thought about it? We tried to make our students think about it in this week's first #ise2025 lecture.

Today the kickoff meeting of our project course "Telling Data Stories with Semantic Technologies and Generative AI" in collaboration with Academy of Sciences & Literature, Mainz, took place, introducing the general topic and our dedicated course software & research data infrastructure. Stay tuned for news & updates ;-)
