Let me ask my colleagues if anyone would like to volunteer to sub for me. Professor B: I can cover your class. Professor A: Thanks! Let me know how I can pay you back. Professor B: I'm going to miss class later in the semester for a conference. Can you cover for me then?</blockquote> There are two problems. First, Professors A and B did not "pay each other back:" they both did unpaid labor *for the university.* They should both get paid overtime. Secondly, it is completely preposterous to put the sick person in charge of finding their sub. Contrast that with K-12 schools where (at least in good school districts) they have people who's full-time job is to substitute teach. That likely wouldn't work for grad classes due to how specialized the knowledge is, but for lower level classes, every university department should have at least one full-time substitute teacher whose job is to cover the classes of instructors who are absent. "But who's going to pay for it?!?" Excuse me, but what? Why TF are police taking their orders from school administrators when it comes to arrests? The man was brutally assaulted, and he clearly told officers he wanted to press charges against the perpetrator. They told him no, because of the school's wishes. Shiny Amygdala, ph.DWhen k-12 teachers go on strike, I always have mixed thoughts. When I read the demands of the teachers who strike I dually note them, and it all makes sense ( my spouse is an educator--- a sub-- and is treated very poorly on account of being Autistic), YET, the way strikers are going about it is poorly organized. I think that bringing parents of students into the fight is IMPERATIVE. The teachers are not the victims of the students. As exploited and manipulated as teachers are, it will never equate the oppression of youth. Teachers won't be ultimately successful at striking, and winning those strikes, unless they bring their students, and students' families into that fight. A teacher can't be arrested for repeatedly not showing up to work. A teacher won't lose custody of their family for not showing up to work. Parents do lose custody of children for repeat truancy. Students do have to show up to court for repeated truancy. (This next part is especially toward educators) NORMALIZE STUDENTS NOT SHOWING UP TO SCHOOL. NORMALIZE STUDENTS PROTESTING THAT SYSTEM. Don't over explain and explain and explain how you're undervalued as an educator and then in a different post, talk about the problems of truancy and students "giving up". It seems like you had no problem with being part of the school to prison pipeline as long as it benefitted you. I’ve found it humbling and I think it makes me a better consultant. It’s challenged some of my assumptions but also confirmed others.
