Richard Rathe<p><span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://mastodon.social/@MatWright" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>MatWright</span></a></span> </p><p>I respectfully disagree on one point: <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/SurgicalMasks" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>SurgicalMasks</span></a> also protect patients FROM infection (during surgery for example).This was their main function originally.</p><p>You are correct that surg masks are much less effective protecting the WEARER from small aerosolized particles like <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/Covid" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Covid</span></a>.</p><p>It takes <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/N95" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>N95</span></a> or equivalent <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/masks" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>masks</span></a> /#respirators to do that.</p><p>But if all you’ve got is a surg mask, wear it! It’s not nothin’.</p><p>Also anyone with a <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/cough" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>cough</span></a> who enters a confined public space should wear some kind of mask as a courtesy to those around them IMO.</p><p>When someone coughs, surg masks DO decrease how much infectious material gets into the air, on surfaces, etc.</p><p>It’s a big world out there with many respiratory pathogens (<a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/flu" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>flu</span></a> and <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/TB" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>TB</span></a> come to mind). Not all of them a aerosolized like Covid.</p>
