Edit: How much do y'all rock? All the rocks. Solutions have been arrived upon. Steps will be taken. Thanks everyone!

Ok, this is probably a question I could answer if I wade through all of the bullshit that passes as search engines and tech sites these days, but I thought I'd try a shortcut first, and Ask Mastodon.

If I have a windows 10 box, what is the best way to install win98 software that might want it's own drivers and versions of underlying core OS bits?

It's proprietary code, the creator has passed away, it was hand rolled for me, and I have about 20 years worth of formulations and product history using it. I have all the licensing, I've just lost the machine upon which it has been running since it was compiled.

@hisold My bank stopped issuing #girocard cards with #magstrip 10+ years ago as magstrip was phased out and #NFC was phased in as well as #PSD1 being introduced.

  • Even before that merchants rarely accepted magstrips and those who did asked for #ID as soon as purchases [i.e. fuel at a gas station) exceeded like €100 because unlike #Chip + #PIN the payment processor does not guarantee them that the payment will be accepted and the amount guaranteed.

That's the main push factor: Alongside lower processing fees and faster processing, the Chip+PIN & #NFC systems actually request a blockage of the amount and will automatically decline without incuring fees if the balance / limit is below that amount - sometimes even before the PIN has been entered (it'll just not show it until the PIN is entered so fraudsters can't just abuse this as a means to check balance.

  • There's a nice podcast with #JohnBoseak where he explains how stuff used to [and allegeldy still does] work in the #USA re: #CreditCards. Given that I worked for a #PaymentProcessor in the past this is some basic knowledge re: #security, because one needs to understand how stuff like CNP ("Card not Present") works and how the system is architected to the point that even if someone were to hack the database of said payment processor, they'd never find any CCs or the CVVs stored there at all.

It's also insightful because #fraud would be way more rampant if the card issuer, payment processor and card system operator [i.e. AMEX, VISA, MasterCard] didn't all run their own AFE [Anti-Fraud Engine] each automatically assessing risks within less than a second for every transaction.

  • That's why one can get their #CC blocked when using a #VPN and why fraudsters need the location of their victims because if I had a CC and used it regularly and someone were to try to swipe a skilled copy of that at a Walmart or Best Buy on the East Coast of the USA less than 24 hours of my last use in Germany, that would automatically get declined as fraud and the person at the cashier will call security because noone is travelling that quickly that far.

But that's just some cold OSINT based off #TechSupport and peeking behind the curtains professionally...

  • There's way more but I can't go into details on that.

Rest assured if you have a CC you can be as certain that someone tried to abuse it as I'm certain my bank blocked fraudulent money orders against my account because of AFEs working - it's just > 99% of all fraud attempts get blocked instantly and merchants rate-limited or kicked off the system when they do something suspicious.

  • Same reason why one can't frame someone for a crime by just wiring obviously illicit funds to their account: AML (Anti-Money Laundering) will catch that and unless the account holder were to ask "Where's the money/transaction?" #FinCEN et. al. won't even bother calling the account holder up simply because "oops I wired money to the wrong account. Can you please send it back?"- #scam is a well-known method to turn unsuspecting people into money launderers.

So yeah, that "#magstrip" may be just lacquer but unless it's specifically advertised otherwise only holds the CC & CVV as well as service codes [i.e. chip+pin only] to tell the terminal "Don't accept magstrip, mandate Chip+PIN"]...

  • Outside the #USA, this is the norm due to #PSD2 exceeding #PCIDSS by quite a lot!

Only underdeveloped countries like the #US still use #Magstrips and #credit and not Chip+PIN & #debit!

This morning I did a tech support phone call with an existing client. Based on her area code, I think she’s in California, but I don’t actually know that for sure. It’s kind of humorous! With credit card billing, I have to enter the billing zip code, but I don’t bother looking them up. The location just doesn’t really matter.

Anyway, back to the call. She visited a website for an animal rescue organization. Seems safe enough, right? She ended up with an uncontrollable, noisy pop-up that said her computer was infected. “Don’t turn your computer off!” it said, and it wouldn’t stop beeping.

She did the right thing. She turned her computer off! I’m so proud of her.

At some point, she turned her computer back on, and everything seemed normal. She called me to see if there was anything else to do. An extremely computer literate person in her life had recommended that she do a factory reset on her computer, but she was hoping she wouldn’t have to do that much work.

This is where risk assessment comes in.

I told my client that her advisor was not wrong at all. That was absolutely the safest and best advice.

But, usually those pop-ups are the baited hook, and not the malware. If my client had clicked on a link, or called the “support” phone number in the pop-up, the risk level goes up immediately. Instead, she did the one thing the cybercriminal told her not to do, because it defeats the infection attempt: she turned the computer off.

I offered to reset the browser, but warned her that doing so might delete some saved security settings, and she’d probably have to re-enter passwords on some of the sites she visits. I also told her that she could keep using the computer for a few days without any changes, and if the problem doesn’t reoccur, everything is probably fine.

Remember, the pop-up is the baited hook, not the malware.

For now, she chose to take no action. The call was ten minutes long. She offered to pay. I told her no, let’s call this one customer care. I told her that if she had agreed to have me to reset the browser or run a virus scan, and things like that, I would’ve charged her, but not for answering a few questions.

THE LESSON
The client is the person with the power. Explain options and risks. Let the client make the decision. It’s their equipment. It’s their life. It’s their money.

I could’ve taken advantage of the situation and said, “Oh, yes, your advisor is right! We must factory reset your computer! I’ll help you do that right now!” That’s how I would’ve made the most money today. Instead, I chose to keep a client for life. The money will come.

Apple hates me, needed to reset my password to get my developer account set up. They won't text me from the laptop I'm on, I have to use someone else's Apple device. So get the other Apple device, do reset password all over again enter the same exact details (email & phone), and then they text me to verify me 🤦 why couldn't we do that from the PC?

I just helped my Dad setup his new Windows desktop. I wanted him to try Linux, but the repair shop guy spooked him out of it.

I found a decent computer for him and I think he was happy to get a new computer his old one was really old.

Anyway, we spent like an hour setting it up. It was all just changing bs setting and uninstalling bloat.

I just did a mental check if we installed Linux, he would be done after install.

i am having trouble with the spatie media library for php. i'm using a form to upload an image to the server gets saved under /storage/app/public, but when the server tries to retrieve the file to show a thumbnail, it looks for it in /storage and thus can't find it.

Does anyone know what could be causing this? I am guessing it's something very silly, but I can't figure it out :neofox_googly_shocked:

So my VPS troubles continue (can't connect to the VPS). Tech support is now suggesting my IP may be blocked and they're asking for my IP. Should I give them this information?

Update: it seems I can connect from another device with another IP. Whether it's the device or the IP that makes the difference though is still unknown. But why would them blocking my IP cause a timeout rather than simply giving me a connection error?

🔧 Gerne boosten!

My spouse and I are laughing, watching her iPhone slowly, steadily glitch/bug out due to having nearly no free storage, because she likes living on the edge. The phone’s contacts are all missing, only raw telephone numbers in Messages app now.

Then, with perfect sit-com timing, this pops up on her laptop.

I'm looking to migrate our website domains to services not owned by google/squarespace, and our web host to something cheaper than bluehost.

It's just a simple wordpress website for a card game, Penguinslap.com. We don't really get any traffic at all. Very occasionally we make a sale, and those links redirect to a PayPal site.

Any suggestions?
