Today’s listening is ‘Tomorrow The Green Grass’, the 1995 album by The Jayhawks.

This was the final album from The Jayhawks with Mark Olsen in the band.

It’s a very good record but I always think that the band went on to greater heights after Olsen had left them. There was something about his song-writing that I always found a little ‘off’, in some indefinable way.

Still though, Olsen and Louris’ combined harmonies were a thing of wonder!

Well worth a listen.

Today’s listening is ‘Ready For The Flood’, the 2009 album by Mark Olson & Gary Louris.

An almost wholly acoustic double album from two of the original members of The Jayhawks, it marked their reunion after Olson had left the band in the mid 1990’s.

The highlight is the way that their singing voices complement each other, just like in the old days!

The reunited Jayhawks were to subsequently tour together, a tour that I saw in London, before Mark Olson left again.

Today’s listening is ‘Sound Of Lies’, the 1997 album by The Jayhawks.

After founder member Mark Olson suddenly quit The Jayhawks, their future looked uncertain.
However, Gary Louris, Marc Perlman and Karen Grotberg re-grouped, added drummer Tim O’Reagan, significantly changed their musical direction and came up with this excellent album.

Some distance from the ‘folksy Americana’ of their past, but all the better for it in my opinion!

Today’s listening is ‘Smile’, the 2000 album by The Jayhawks.

In particular I’ve been listening to the 2014 vinyl reissue of this album.

On this record The Jayhawks mostly moved away from their more ‘folksy Americana’ style towards a heavier rock, almost pop, sound on many of the tracks.

For me, side 1 is stronger than side 2, with side 1 featuring some great tracks such as ‘Smile’ and ‘I’m Gonna Make You Love Me’.

Well worth a listen!

#GreatAlbums1990s - #TheJayhawks#HollywoodTownHall (1992). Largely overlooked during the heyday of grunge, this Twin Cities outfit resurrected the spirit of Gram Parsons with forlorn lyrics and soaring harmonies. “Waiting for the Sun” tumbles down the highway in an open-top car. “Clouds” and “Sister Cry” cruise the misty mountains. And “Two Angels” strips the mud from an earlier version. Poco without the dross, or the Eagles on less cocaine.

Quitting before I get to Tampa because, like Riverside, I got nothing.
