In #SanFrancisco, the annual observance will take place Sunday 2/16 at the Kabuki.
The ceremony and blessings, Carrying the Light for Justice, will also honor Dr. Satsuki Ina, and be followed by a short candlelight procession through Japantown.

#MinCup24 R2M8: #Charoite versus #Topaz

Chaorite is an intensely purple mineral with a fibrous, swirly pattern that’s been compared to Van Gogh’s Starry Night. It forms from contact metamorphism in Siberia.

Topaz is a hard, many-hued gemstone that crystallizes along the fractures in igneous rock, and is mined all over the world. It is pleochroic; i.e. it can appear different colors from different angles.

Time to choose your mineral!

#MinCup24 topaz Vs spodumene

I voted #topaz! Spodumene might be a harbinger of weirder, more wonderful rocks, but there's something about the crisp, bright, clean, clarity of topaz that I love more 🤩 🥰

Here's a wee topaz from "Skottland" (probably the Cairngorms) in the Naturhistoriska Riksmuseet, Stockholm which I saw in 2016. It's from the collection of the legendary chemist & mineralogist Berzelius (1779-1848) #Geology #Chemistry #Mineralogy @MineralCup

At high pressures, fluorine-free topaz is stable: Topaz-OH. It's likely present only on recent Earth in our solar system: water, aluminous sediments (shales; pelites) from continental crust and cold subduction zones are all required.

Given these, Topaz-OH can potentially transport water into the mantle transition zone (where it's stored in #ringwoodite ) Figure from Huang et al (2020).
