Graham Ward<p>Maps are conventionally drawn with north at the top of the sheet. But Northamptonshire by Blome (1673), Morden (1695) and Bowen (1720) all have west at the top and north on the right. Why? Is this because it emphasises the importance of the River Nene flowing across the county which was largely navigable? Or is it because of the layout of the intended atlas they were to be part of? <a href="https://mastodon.green/tags/Northamptonshire" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Northamptonshire</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.green/tags/maps" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>maps</span></a> <span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://a.gup.pe/u/histodons" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>histodons</span></a></span> <a href="https://mastodon.green/tags/histodons" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>histodons</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.green/tags/topography" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>topography</span></a></p>

Panethos<p>Most of us probably think of Kansas as largely flat farmlands and prairie for as far as the eye can see in every direction. Well, that mindset is wrong in many areas of the state, such as the<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flint_Hill" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank"> Flint Hills</a> of eastern Kansas and especially at <a href="http://www.kansastravel.org/monumentrocks.htm" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Monument Rocks</a> in the western portion of the state.</p><p>Neither Dorothy or Toto could possibly imagine these beautiful chalk formations south of Oakley, Kansas.</p><p>Both above and below are images taken during our visit last month. Anyone visiting this location will come away with a new appreciation for the surprisingly diverse geography of the Sunflower State.&nbsp; Please keep in mind that Monument Rocks are located on private property. Please respect the rules, particularly DO NOT attempt to climb these delicate formations.
