my parents were boomers who always leaned a little hippy, so naturally we spent a good amount of time visiting Kaua’i when i was a kid, lol. ive hiked, swam, kayaked, open water snorkled, and lodged all over this island. and even when i was little, i was always captivated by this magical place. you have moments there that blur the lines of physical and metaphysical…it’s hard to explain.

this is a photo i took there in 2012…and sadly my last visit was in 2017 🥲 overdue for a visit 🖤🌴

A creek gulch area i passed over a few days ago. This creek looks small, but it sure gets big when the rains come. I bet it gets real loud and tumultuous. I wonder how long it's taken to carve this gulch...

The area around there is mostly pasture land and grassy fields, but in the gulch, it's full jungle. The way these river gulches hold moisture and shade provides a most fantastic habitat for just about all kinds of plants (including invasive). It's basically moist and shady all the time (great mosquito and pig habitat too lol). The rivers that make these gulches often have freshwater crawfish in them too.

Anyway, I was just crossing the little bridge over the gulch and stopped to take the photo. I don't think there's an easy way to get down to the creek. But it sure is lovely to look down into it and see the jungle!

* From August to November, the rains decrease and the dry period of the Amapari River begins. At this time, the ascent of the river becomes slower and more careful. With the water level lower, the rocks present in their rapids require more expertise from boat pilots.
