Only Ohm<p>It's potentially relevant that, in an attempt to make sure I'm running as little closed-source code as possible, I've either disabled or denied lots of permissions to many of the vendor-installed apps on the phone. <a href="https://mas.to/tags/Android" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Android</span></a> <a href="https://mas.to/tags/troubleshooting" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>troubleshooting</span></a> <a href="https://mas.to/tags/permissions" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>permissions</span></a></p>
Only Ohm<p>I'm having terrible difficulty getting a variety of apps on my Android phone to play custom notification sounds from wav or mp3 files. I can choose the relevant files as notifications sounds in the apps' internal settings menus, but I get either silence or the default notification sound when there's a notification. The files play successfully in my music player app. Anyone have any advice, please?<br><a href="https://mas.to/tags/Android" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Android</span></a> <a href="https://mas.to/tags/permissions" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>permissions</span></a> <a href="https://mas.to/tags/troubleshooting" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>troubleshooting</span></a></p>
Ercanbrack<p>I updated to the latest version of “Ice Cubes”, the Mastodon client. Now I’m not getting notified of posts in my notifications section. I went a day without a single notification, and thought it was really strange. I went into the app, and found long conversations that I had completely missed out on. Time for some troubleshooting to determine whether my install is corrupted, or if the new version has a bug, or if there is a problem on my OS.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/IceCubes" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>IceCubes</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/Mastodon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Mastodon</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/MastodonClient" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>MastodonClient</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/Troubleshooting" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Troubleshooting</span></a></p>

Tantek Çelik<p>My Garmin watch did not sync activities with the Garmin Connect iOS app upon returning home from a week of travels. It did sync my steps from the day I landed, my sleep that night, and steps the following day. It just failed to pick up my running, hiking, and other activities logged when I was abroad. <br><br>After a little searching and filtering out obvious tips (make sure Bluetooth is on and paired), I found the key steps and fixed it.<br><br>How to get the Garmin Connect iOS app to sync Garmin watch activities that are seemingly being ignored:<br><br>1. unpair watch from phone (iOS Settings &gt; Bluetooth &gt; (i) next to watchname &gt; "Forget This Device")<br>2. hard restart watch (e.g. hold down backlight button on a fenix 7S Pro to turn it off)<br>3. restart Garmin Connect app (force quit and re-open)<br>4. re-pair watch to phone<br>5. wait a while for all the activities to sync<br><br>It seemed to sync hikes and walks first, then runs, roughly in reverse chronological order.<br><br>The syncing spinner indicator in Garmin Connect took a while and prematurely completed the progress circle ○, and kept “spinning” the arrows 🔁 inside the circle for many minutes.<br><br>Note: having some idea how software is written and handles queues etc., I highly recommend fixing any syncing problems like this before recording another activity in your watch. There is a chance that the software bug(s) that caused the syncing problem in the first place may inadvertently only pick up the latest activity and make it even harder to recover or sync the previously unsynced activities.<br><br>I had no luck with web searching, e.g. for<br>* why is Garmin ios app not syncing recent activities from my Garmin watch<br>and similar queries.<br><br>All “AI Overview” results were useless.<br><br>Only after going to <a class="" href="https://support.garmin.com/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">https://support.garmin.com/</a> and entering my watch model name and number did I somehow find this article:<br>* Garmin Connect App: Device Is Paired but Not Connecting to App: <a class="" href="https://support.garmin.com/en-US/?faq=9BcXLSQ4A22gasLarkUvH6" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">https://support.garmin.com/en-US/?faq=9BcXLSQ4A22gasLarkUvH6</a><br><br>Which while not the exact problem I was having (my watch did connect, and sync two days of steps and one night of sleep), it felt close enough to be worth reading.<br><br>Steps 3 and 4 in the article gave the key steps to try (though I split step 4 into two parts, and in the middle only restarted my watch, there was no reason to restart my phone)<br><br>That article linked to another article on "How Do I Restart My Garmin Device?" which I also found useful: <a class="" href="https://support.garmin.com/en-US/?faq=A6gOR1U2zDAFqmJVdap6k6" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">https://support.garmin.com/en-US/?faq=A6gOR1U2zDAFqmJVdap6k6</a><br><br>Hopefully by blogging this, the next person that has a similar problem (my guess is the Garmin Connect Android app works similarly) can more quickly find this solution and key steps by searching the open web.<br><br><a class="" href="https://indieweb.social/tags/Garmin" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span class="p-category">Garmin</span></a> <a class="" href="https://indieweb.social/tags/watch" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span class="p-category">watch</span></a> <a class="" href="https://indieweb.social/tags/GarminWatch" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span class="p-category">GarminWatch</span></a> <a class="" href="https://indieweb.social/tags/sportsWatch" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span class="p-category">sportsWatch</span></a> <a class="" href="https://indieweb.social/tags/GarminConnect" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span class="p-category">GarminConnect</span></a> <a class="" href="https://indieweb.social/tags/troubleShooting" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span class="p-category">troubleShooting</span></a> <a class="" href="https://indieweb.social/tags/GarminTroubleShooting" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span class="p-category">GarminTroubleShooting</span></a></p>

J. Steven York<p><span>A couple nights ago I came home to find the alien and lights in my second story shop window. Was out. I figured it had gotten unplugged, but no, the plug was dead! This floor is basically a storage warehouse, so all the other outlets were behind shelves. I found ONE across the room, crawled under a shelf and -- dead. The ceiling lights are on the same breaker, so that wasn't it. But I was envisioning a broken plug or connection upstream, and <br>I went through all my old construction photos, pre-drywall, to figure out where the other plugs on the floor and the wires connecting them were located. It appeared the first plug in the run was near the stairs, right above the breaker panel on the first floor. <br> And that's when I remembered that the first plug on the circuit downstars had a GFI plug that had caused me trouble once before (Ironically, it had been hidden behind a bookcase in my wife's writing office). Was there one on the second floor? If so, it would be that first plug, deep behind a shelf. Also behind a lot of flat things that I'd put BEHIND that shelf. <br> I pulled out multiple sheets of plywood and perfboard blocking the way, and way behind the shelf, I could just see the plug. Unable to see clearly, I stuck my phone back and took a closeup of the plug with my phone. Yeah, that spoiler picture. Red LED. Poorly marked reset button.<br> With difficulty I reached back, found the reset by feel, and pushed it. The lights came on! Yay! My fears of an expensive electrician visit were relieved!<br> The lesson here is, if you're building or remodeling something, TAKE LOTS OF PICTURES during every stage of construction, especially before the drywall and insulation go up. Get clear shots of every interior and exterior wall, and don't forget the ceiling.<br>Knowing where your studs, rafters, beams, and hidden systems, pipes, wires, ducts, are, can save you hundreds or even thousands of dollars later. <br> Even if you don't understand what you're looking at, you can show them to a professional when they are coming in to aid in troubleshooting or modifications. Sure, there are ways to "look" through walls, but pictures are much quicker and more certain.<br> Now my alien returns to his mission to bring cheer to a dark modern world!<br></span><a href="https://catodon.social/tags/homerepair" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#homerepair</a><span> </span><a href="https://catodon.social/tags/DIY" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#DIY</a><span> </span><a href="https://catodon.social/tags/homeowner" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#homeowner</a><span> </span><a href="https://catodon.social/tags/homeownership" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#homeownership</a><span> </span><a href="https://catodon.social/tags/repairs" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#repairs</a><span> </span><a href="https://catodon.social/tags/electrical" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#electrical</a><span> </span><a href="https://catodon.social/tags/homerepair" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#homerepair</a><span> </span><a href="https://catodon.social/tags/troubleshooting" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#troubleshooting</a><span> </span><a href="https://catodon.social/tags/lifehacks" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#lifehacks</a></p>
Luka Rubinjoni<p>Ok, makers &amp; tinkerers... My Dremel 4000 just started acting all weird - the rotor moves, but won't spin up to speed. I might have overloaded the tool while routing some wood. I have opened the device, and there's no visible damage on the brushes/coils/electronics. Does anyone have experience with troubleshooting and fixing Dremel tools? <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/Dremel" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Dremel</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/DIY" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>DIY</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/repair" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>repair</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/troubleshooting" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>troubleshooting</span></a> EDIT: the armature was burned, I replaced it with a new one.</p>
