#unbound

I haven't seen this shitshow mentioned on Mastodon, so I am bringing it to your attention.

It seems that the #crowdfunding #publisher #Unbound has folded, leaving everyone else out of pocket – authors and pledgers alike.

The same two people who so mismanaged Unbound then set up a new publishing company, #Boundless, and "acquired" Unbound's IP, so they can continue to publish books without any obligation to pay their old company's debts. Authors and purchasers are thus left out of pocket.

I wonder what their next (perfectly legal, TYVM) venture will be called.

I replaced 10 MiB Go bloat with an AWK script and a tiny HTTP/CGI server. This time it’s the #Unbound metrics exporter. It does the some job as the unbound_exporter written in Golang, but in a fraction of total lines of code, disk space and memory usage. And it’s perhaps even safer, given how common vulnerabilities are in Golang’s core libraries…

Many #Prometheus exporters (scrapers) can be rewritten in much efficient way, they are usually very simple. Another example is the Node Exporter – OpenWrt rewrote it in a few lines of Lua.

You may think that CGI is an ancient technology; I surely wouldn’t recommend it for running any public website, but I think that for this use case – metrics exporter only accessed from a private monitoring network – it’s an ideal solution.

FWIW To read my personal background on the #Unbound matter, this is what I wrote last week when the news broke:

www.linkedin.comUnlocked: I might have accidentally destroyed an entire publishing house!… | Steven GoodwinUnlocked: I might have accidentally destroyed an entire publishing house! At the end of 2023 I released a book "20 GOTO 10" via the publisher Unbound. (4.4 stars on Amazon!) It sold tens of thousands of copies, and yet, I was not paid for any of them. I waited. Politely emailed. Looked past their emails of "any day now" and waited some more. Last year, I filed a legal case. The week after, they sent an email to all their authors claiming "issues" with payment. A few weeks ago, I escalated my case to the County Court. Today, they sent an email saying "We will shortly be announcing that Unbound (United Authors Publishing Limited) has gone into Administration." In short - they took my royalties, paid themselves, ran, and started a new company to absolve themselves of the responsibilities and the debt. Guess what? The same people are in charge! No morals. No learnings. Had I filed suit earlier, it might have distracted them from genuine recovery work, and more writers would have lost money. Had I not filed, they might still be selling the dream. But since they launched a new magazine while we were all waiting on royalties, I don't feel bad about playing my part in their downfall. (As Spike Milligan might have said!)

I wanted to set up VPN with ad-blocking for laptop and mobile, for when away from home, so I installed FreeBSD 14.2 on a Raspberry Pi 4, because why not?

Followed:

1) zenarmor.com/docs/network-secu

2) it-notes.dragas.net/2023/09/23

(only using IPv4)

Seems to work as intended, but I'm not sure if ~500 ms ping times are normal for 5G mobile connection through VPN.

(1/2) I gotta say, the echo dot makes for a good wired/wireless speaker when you cripple their ability to contact Amazon domains.

I know they have a hardcoded DNS but I could just force it to only use PiHole with a firewall rule in opnsense. It's not that complicated.

I mean I could get a more decent speaker with no spyware, but if you've got one lying around and...

On Friday night, Donald Trump fired at least 15 independent inspectors general in a late-night massacre that appeared to have been illegal.

Yet since then, that story has only gotten worse.

First, Trump subsequently defended the purge by calling it
“very standard,” which is clearly an effort to #normalize #lawlessness.

Second, some Republicans quickly signaled that they will be just fine with this, confirming once again that he will be #largely #unbound in his second term.
