Today's adventure in home networking: figuring out how to setup site-to-site #VPN with my #Unifi #Ubiquiti hardware. I think that the UniFi Site Magic approach is probably the right one for me?

But I seem to need to set my #ATT fiber modem (a #bgw320-500 modem) into passthrough mode. Which I think I did. But my Unifi #UDR7 is still seeing the internal IP from the fiber modem.

Is there a better way to do this?

i know why you're so happy! it's because i finally got to:

- [ ] un-fsck my WAN interface packet filter so that i can at least establish a tunnel for an ipv6 allocation from #hurricaneElectric" on the backlog section of: `+iow+todo - things still broken here.md` 😂

i have a mom and pop fiber carrier in #IOW and they're expensive and not confidence-inspiring SMEs every time i talk to Networking. irredeemably lazy for an ISP to not be dual stack in 2025.

i'm glad to be back.

router is #unifi.

After 10 years of dutiful 24/7 broadcasting of my wifi bits, one of my UAP-AC-Lite units failed, and somehow rebooted a switch with it.

I've been debating getting some U7 Pro Wall units to upgrade the house and replace this mix of older AC units.

Any reason I shouldn't go U7 Pro? Something else out there I should be considering before I pull the trigger?

Ich habe letzte Woche zwei alte, ausgemusterte #UniFi AP AC Pro WiFi-APs erhalten, deren ekelhaft klebrige Soft Touch-Oberflächen jede Menge Schmutz angenommen hatten. 🤢

Today's WTF in Gareth's Network of Chaos.

I was running my whole home LAN off a single #Ubiquiti #UniFi Express. It worked fine, although the UI was utter dogshit. Slow as balls.

I upgraded a few weeks ago to the new #DreamRouter 7. Holy shit, both the upgrade (take a backup of settings from the Express and restore it onto the new one, instant success!) and the performance of the UI were amazing.

Except for one thing. My Eufy doorbell wouldn't connect to the internet if I put it on my IoT VLAN (everything else that was running on that VLAN on the Express migrated to the Dream seamlessly). If I put it on the Guest network, it said it was on the Internet but I couldn't get to it via the app. I've just (while typing this) figured out that that's probably because even though I have the captive portal set to off, you do need to visit a web page and click a button the first time you join the network. I think this is dumb, but don't have enough guests for it to be a big problem.

So today, just for a laugh, I reset the Express and adopted it into the Dream Router as a mesh device.

And the doorbell connected to the Express on the IoT VLAN and immediately had internet connectivity again.

I've set that device to only use the Express which should keep it online going forwards, but seriously, WTF?

Thinking about spinning up a secure, VLAN-isolated (and firewalled via #UniFi) VM on my #Proxmox #homelab server to act as a public-facing edge node powered by #Tailscale Funnel, custom domain, and Tailscale-issued TLS certs.

For routing multiple services (Gitea, SearXNG, blog, etc.) through Caddy, all sandboxed from my main tailnet + LAN. No open ports, no cloud VPS, no trust leaks.

Any thoughts?

It was again #DNS 😆 I restricted the traffic from my internal zone to the untrusted zone in my #UniFi Gateway, for security reasons.Suddenly, all my IoT devices in the untrusted zone went offline. I checked everything and ensured that the untrusted zone could communicate with my PiHole in the internal Zone and the Internet.
Unfortunately, by restricting the traffic, I inadvertently blocked the return traffic from the Pi-hole. 🤦‍♂️

Huh that's cool. #UnifiProtect #unifi from #Ubiquiti now supports 3rd party IP cams (at least for core features). That product had been a walled garden for many years.

It's probably not the right fit for my use case (more than a dozen Amcrest IP cams that I do local things with, have a video display of the live feeds, and push periodic snapshots to a website) but it's cool that this is a thing now.

I'm contemplating upgrading my parents router to a #Unifi Dream Router 7. The issue I'm wrestling with is I've blown up a half dozen network switches and their current router has one dead port from some mystery issue somewhere in the wired network in their house. I have not had luck tracking down the problem and finally switched as many devices to wifi as I could

Maybe some ethernet-to-fiber boxes would be useful in electrically isolating the router completely from any other ethernet devices?

In Japan i read when they decommission an old tool or machine they give it a sending off ceremony of thanks

little #unifi switch, you have been happily passing a fuck ton of traffic around my apartment for many years, next to the tumble dryer exhaust in a small dark utility room. You did well, and thanks 🙏

Have a martini, or is that for the grieving…
