Tony Novak
My life has been deeply intertwined with agricultural research. From my childhood on an organic farm to participating in 4H clubs, attending Delaware Valley College of Science and Agriculture, conducting cancer research at Smith Kline Beckman, studying microbiology in graduate school at Temple University, and now supporting research projects at BaySave in Money Island, NJ. Through collaborations with over a dozen institutions like The Nature Conservancy, Rutgers University, and Stevens Institute of Technology, I’ve gained extensive exposure to agricultural research topics. Over the years, I’ve read hundreds of research project abstracts, giving me a strong understanding of the issues critical to survival and sustainability.
Historically, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has been a leading promoter of research programs in our region. However, recent developments have raised alarm. Sharon Strickland, Agriculture Research Service (ARS) administrator for the Northeast Area, announced that the USDA’s Research, Education and Economics division will no longer consider funding agreements for many vital topics.
The excluded topics include:
• Water-related issues: water quality, clean water, safe drinking water, water conservation, water pollution, groundwater pollution.
• Pollution concerns: soil pollution, air pollution, sediment remediation.
• Emerging contaminants: microplastics, PFAS/PFOA, PCBs.
• Climate and energy: climate change, climate science, greenhouse gas emissions (including methane), global warming.
• Alternative energy sources: solar energy, geothermal energy, nuclear energy.
• Agricultural runoff: diesel runoff and rural water.
I cannot recall a single agricultural research project I’ve encountered that did not address one or more of these topics. This decision undermines the foundation of agricultural research and poses significant challenges to addressing critical environmental and sustainability issues.
#USDA
#climatecrisis
