A Violet Snail (Janthina sp.) preying on a By-the-wind Sailor (Velella velella)
Velella velella back on the north Oregon coast! Got to the beach this morning and there were slippery smelly drifts of them covering the sand. They're so cool - so blue and strange. I don't even mind the smell. #velellavelella #by-the-wind-sailor #hydrozoa #marinelife #ocean #beach #phoneography #oregoncoast

Velella velella! Waves of velella velella have washed up on Oregon beaches lately. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Velella #marinelife #notactuallyajellyfish #jellyfish #velellavelella #velella #oregoncoast #beach #phoneography #hydrozoa #bythewindsailor
We have a lot of velella velella (by the wind sailors) on beaches at the moment. Kind of beautiful but also when they dry out they make me think of skin, fingerprints and blisters, as if 100s of thousands of amateur marathon runners dumped out their socks. #VelellaVelella #marinheadlands

Hundreds of thousands of By-the-wind-sailors (Velella velella; which are an unusual floating colonial athecate hydroid) just blanketing Asilomar this morning They're making the waves *thick* with their doomed corpses. There was also a bonus Gulfweed Crab (Planes minutes) hanging around.
