The word is a portmanteau of the words "volcanic" and "smog."</p><p>The principal components are water vapour (H₂O), carbon dioxide (CO₂), sulphur dioxide (SO₂), and hydrogen sulphide (H₂S).<br>High level sulphides create a blue haze, filtering the sunlight to a lurid orange.</p>
