🌏 White-faced heron (Egretta novaehollandiae)

The white-faced heron (Egretta novaehollandiae), also known as the white-fronted heron, is a medium-sized heron with a distinct white face and pale blue-grey plumage. It has a long, slender neck, a pointed grey-black bill, and yellow legs. In flight, its dark wing feathers contrast with its paler body. This adaptable bird is widespread throughout most of Australasia, including New Guinea, Indonesia, New Caledonia, and New Zealand, favouring any habitat near shallow water, both fresh and saltwater. White-faced herons are often seen foraging solitarily or in small groups, employing methods like stalking or standing still to catch fish, insects, and amphibians. They have a slow, bouncing flight and may roost in trees or on the ground. Their calls include a harsh croak, especially during flight.

🌍🌏 Whooper swan (Cygnus cygnus)

The whooper swan, also known as the common swan, is a large, striking white swan found across a large part of Eurasia, with a long, erect neck and black legs. Its black bill features a prominent triangular yellow patch. During winter, whooper swans are social, forming flocks in wetlands, estuaries, and fields, feeding on aquatic plants, and grains. They are vocal, with a distinctive "whooping" call. In flight, they often form a 'V' shape. They are monogamous, and pairs engage in courtship displays.

🌍 Squacco heron (Ardeola ralloides)

The squacco heron is a compact species of heron known for its small size and distinctive appearance. A migratory bird, it breeds in southern Europe, south-west Asia, and parts of Africa, and overwinters in sub-Saharan Africa. It has pale buff or light brown feathers, streaked with darker markings, and a long, sharply-pointed bill. During breeding season (pictured), it develops long, ornamental plumes on its head, neck, and back. The squacco heron is primarily found in wetland habitats, such as marshes, swamps, and rice fields. It feeds on a variety of aquatic prey, including small fish, frogs, insects, and crustaceans.

🌍 Egyptian goose (Alopochen aegyptiaca)

The Egyptian goose is a stocky, pale brown and grey water bird with a distinctive dark brown eye patch. In flight, it shows contrasting white wing patches. Native to Africa, it has been introduced to Europe and North America. It inhabits wetlands, grasslands, and parks. Egyptian geese are territorial and can be aggressive, especially during breeding. They primarily eat plants and form strong pair bonds, often seen in pairs or family flocks outside the breeding season. No subspecies are recognised.
