Dark Observer
1/x Only 2(!) out of my 115 followers participated in my recent survey if I should explain what fascinates me about professional Japanese #sumo. Both (thanks btw. to whoever you are) voted yes, so here it is:

- Every two months a so-called 'grand sumo' tournament is held at one of 3 locations across Japan (Tokyo, Osaka, Fukuoka). The current March tournament concludes coming Sunday
- A tournament lasts for 15 days and each wrestler competes in 1 bout per day
- The wrestler who has won the most bouts on day 15 wins the tournament and gets a huge silver trophy plus a certain amount of money
- All other fighters try to at least achieve more wins than losses (kachi-koshi) and avoid a losing record (make-koshi), so 8 or more wins is good, 7 and less is bad
- The wrestlers are ranked according to a complex system based on how many bouts they've won. The top rank is called #Yokozuna and there are only a small number of fighters who reach that position during their career
