last RT: happy to see protests in Rhinelander, Wisconsin, in the trumpiest pine-forested corner. When we lived in St Louis we had a friend who grew up outside of Chicago, and somehow it came up that his family’s shorthand for the middle of nowhere was Rhinelander. Upon which I was pleased to inform him that to get to where I grew up, first drive to Rhinelander, then keep going north for another hour. #yooper

A trip to the Upper Peninsula was unfathomable when we bought our Tesla. The only supercharger was in Sault Ste Marie on the Canadian side. What a difference five years makes!

In the past five years, a number of chargers have been open with Tesla in Mackinaw City, Escanaba, Marquette, and the Soo on the Michigan side. I wouldn't try with the F150 Lightning yet, but it won't be long! It was neat to see several @FreeWireTech at @Meijer

Hi all. I joined Mastodon in November of 2022, during the first major exodus from the Bird Site. I never really introduced myself, though, so here is my #Introduction:

I am a technical writer by vocation and a photographer by avocation. I am a reformed Catholic (aka "an atheist"). I used to be a right-leaning independent, but the right has moved so far to the right that I guess I'm a leftist, now.

Oh: And I live in the Midwestern United States. And while this old man really doesn't know his way around the fediverse, I'm doing the best that I can.

That covers the basics, I think. Glad to see the renewed interest in Mastodon, and I'm looking forward to interacting with y'all!

An Escanaba, Michigan paper mill shuts down temporarily after an outbreak of #blastomycosis One person is dead and 90+ are confirmed or suspected to have the disease, which originates in moist soil and rotting wood and leaves.

This Freep story is pretty thorough.

The mill is owned by #Billerud (a Swedish company) and recently received up to $200 million in state funding to modernize their product mix.

@kellogh mostly lost that accent when I went to college in Los Angeles but especially in my 20s I’d drift back into it when talking with my parents on the phone. Now I just hear it in a few tiny remnants: mostly place names (Houghton, Ontonagon) and the occasional “oh ja” #yooper
