Charles Pierce explains how movement conservatism works inexorably to roll back the clock on progressive reforms once considered invulnerable.

An entire political industry has been built to re-litigate issues many of us had thought long settled. "In the judiciary, this entail[s] chipping away piecemeal at landmark decisions."

"The legislature then use[s] the judiciary’s work to craft laws to render what remained of those landmark decisions impractical in real life."

"The process only accelerated as movement conservatism increased in strength, and the rollbacks picked up speed as they went back through time, increasingly flattening the achievements of the gay rights movement, the women’s movement, the civil rights movement, the Warren Court, the Square Deal, the New Deal, and finally the Progressive reforms of the early 20th Century."

"And now, across the country—or at least in those parts where Republicans are in charge—we have come at last to the revival of child labor. ...

Arkansas is the most recent test case for the new 1871. Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders signed into law a bill that repealed restrictions on work by children who are 14 or 15 years old. Her office explained that, yes, it was really only for the good of the children."

We're putting children to work again — 14- and 15-year-olds on kill floors in slaughterhouses, on construction sites — because we care about children and really want what's best for them.

It's for the good of the children.

But you won't find OUR children on the kill floors and construction sites.

There are people in the world — lots of them — who actually spent lots of time thinking about ways to make life more miserable for the vulnerable.

There are people who rejoice at the immiserating effects of rolling back laws designed to protect vulnerable others. There are LOTS of people with this mentality.

As S.V. Date notes, even now, seeing all we've seen of what Trump is and portends, there are LOTS of people eager to work for him, to help him win the White House again. Trained professional people with lots of education that clearly did not include inculcating moral values….
