"Last week, the Republican Party’s leading presidential candidate proposed executing suspected shoplifters. ...

Trump’s advocacy of extrajudicial killings was widely covered by newspapers and TV stations in California but generally ignored by the national press. No mainstream TV channels aired or quoted his speech live later that night.”

The Washington Post · Trump’s violent rhetoric is getting muted coverage by the news mediaBy Paul Farhi

"CNN and MSNBC talked about it in panel discussions over the next few days. The Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, NPR and PBS never reported it. The New York Times wrote about it four days later and played the story on page 14 of its print edition."

@kimhoar Thanks for noting that. Paul Farhi notes that CNN talked about this in panel discussions over the next few days — which is different, of course, from reporting it as major headline news at the time it happened.

@wdlindsy i Lao think it should have been reported but it might also have given him a rallying cry from the MAGATS. Perhaps presenting it in a panel discussion might have allowed the hosts to comment on how crazy it was. News headlines or stories don’t tend to tell people that something is crazy as they want to appear neutral. NEUTRAL has not helped

@kimhoar Neutral has definitely not helped. You cannot credibly claim to be doing your journalistic job while remaining neutral (or pretending to be remaining neutral) as a vicious assault on democracy is underway.

@wdlindsy stealing is definitely not a crime that deserves death

@gavinisdie Indeed, not. The fundamental principle to be considered here: which should count more, life or property?
