"To understand JD Vance, you need to meet the 'TheoBros.' These extremely online young Christian men want to end the 19th Amendment, restore public flogging, and make America white again. ...
Many TheoBros, for example, don’t think women belong in the pulpit or the voting booth—and even want to repeal the 19th Amendment."

"For some, prison reform would involve replacing incarceration with public flogging. Unlike more mainstream Christian nationalists, like House Speaker Mike Johnson, who are obsessed with the US Constitution, many TheoBros believe that the Constitution is dead and that we should be governed by the Ten Commandments."

"In American Reformer, their unofficial magazine, hagiographies of Spanish dictator Francisco Franco appear alongside full-throated defenses of countries that execute gay people. On podcasts, the TheoBros unpack 'the perils of multiculturalism,' expose 'Burning Man’s wicked agenda,' and peel back the nefarious feminist plot of Taylor Swift."

As Butler notes, the framework in which TheoBros understand women's "place" comes from their patriarch, Douglas Wilson, who has written,
“The sexual act cannot be made into an egalitarian pleasuring party. A man penetrates, conquers, colonizes, plants. A woman receives, surrenders, accepts.”

"Vance is the most disliked figure on either party’s ticket this election year: He’s an unmitigated asshole.
But there’s a group of white men who believe that he may be something more."

"They see Vance’s ugly attacks on women, immigrants, and others as points to be celebrated. And they see him as the leader they’ve been looking for, a kind of anti-diversity messiah—a 'Christian Prince' for a white nationalist America. ...
They see Vance as endorsing their central tenet—that America is for white Christians."

"Other people may be in America, but they live there only with the sufferance of the nation’s true owners. ...
It’s a conglomeration of men who believe that oppressing women and crushing diversity is the way to convert America into their white Christian paradise."

@rayhindle Thank you. Exactly right.
Racism and misogyny dressed up in clerical robes.
Disgusting.
But it has been so since the Iron Age.
@MylesRyden Yes, disgusting, and, yes, deeply embedded in many of the religious traditions of the world.
@wdlindsy
Oh.
An actually self aware Antichrist instead of the instinct driven impulses of Moloch Trump
@MishaVanMollusq Well-stated.
All I can say to this is 'Good grief'
@sufferforme For sure.
American Taliban. Fucking losers.
@brent Definitely Taliban-like, for sure.
@wdlindsy Isn’t JD Vance and his hole trope just catholicism? What does this have to do with Calvinism???
@jonmsterling The hardline Calvinism these men are pushing intersects very nicely and easily with the kind of right-wing theocratic Catholicism Vance now promotes. That's why these disparate groups have made common cause politically. They share theocratic objectives that have a lot to do with putting women back in their "place" and invisibilizing and tormenting LGBTQ people.
@wdlindsy They definitely have common cause, but it is very weird to point to calvinists when the most energetic growing faction in this coalition has been the traditionalist catholics.
@jonmsterling "The most energetic growing faction in this coalition has been the traditionalist catholics":
I'm not sure precisely what coalition you're referencing here. As the linked articles say very clearly, the TheoBros promoting JD Vance are hardline Calvinists.
@troy_frizzell No, not weird and creepy in the least, is it? And also very dangerous.
@wdlindsy @lisamelton These are the guys Margaret Atwood warned us about.
@mykl @lisamelton Yes, indeed.
@wdlindsy So, the Taliban…
@wdlindsy @inthehands Being a former-Catholic atheist:
It is no longer surprising, but remains striking, to encounter people like J.D. Vance who profess to have once been atheists but then re-associated themselves with the most extreme parts of Catholicism for the sake of bigotry and authoritarianism.
@michael_w_busch @inthehands Yes, I agree. But when one considers the enormous unelected and for-life power that a handful of hard-right Catholic operatives employ on the highest court of the land, one begins to see the appeal — for those who want ruthless power to coerce the majority in the name of their theocratic aspirations.
@wdlindsy @michael_w_busch Those who know me know my broken record that “religion” is a red herring, and the things to watch out for are fundamentalism, authoritarianism, and abuse, all of which readily slip in and out of religious clothing — but rarely leave a person. (Dawkins, for example, to my mind, went from religious to anti-religious but never stopped being a fundamentalist.)
@inthehands @wdlindsy I learn from @rebeccawatson that Richard Dawkins is calling himself a "cultural Christian" now.
As a pretext for sexism, racism, and anti-Muslim bigotry.
The authoritarian pattern is worldwide.
@michael_w_busch @wdlindsy @rebeccawatson
Oh gross. I hadn’t heard that.
@inthehands @michael_w_busch Yes, I totally agree. Keep playing that record, please.
@wdlindsy Great, they're giving theobromine a bad name.
@joelvanderwerf And I'd wager not one of them appreciates good chocolate!
@wdlindsy only a weak ineffective man would need to oppress women to make himself feel important. TheoBros aren't Christian, men or worthy. JD Vance shows us what they are. Arrogant, conceited, friendless jerks who don't know how to relate to people.
@Oldfartrant I agree, except they are, in fact, Christians and are promoting a particular kind of Christian theology, one that weaponizes Christianity against women, minority communities, and LGBTQ people. Throughout Christian history, there have always been weaponized iterations of Christianity.
@wdlindsy are they Christians or hate groups using Religion as a cover?
So just calling them assholes is accurate.
@cainmark Seems that way, for sure.
