"The year is 2024 and I have yet to see a major story or report commissioned by a cable news show, newspaper, or magazine that demands that Trump voters go to urban diners and talk to Democratic voters. I have yet to see any finger-wagging paternalism from these establishment leaders asking Trump voters why Donald Trump has yet to crack 50% support from the voting population."

"Like I said, a successful relationship requires reciprocity otherwise it’s simply an exercise in abuse.
After 9 years, I’m done.
I have no desire to reach out to or understand any Trump voter, especially after the 2024 election. I’ve seen enough. They voluntarily chose the most corrupt, dishonest, criminal, unqualified man on Earth to lead the most powerful nation."

Michele Hornish is another of those who refuse to play the let's-pretend and let's-make-nice game this Thanksgiving and sit at table with relatives who voted for Donald Trump, knowing full well exactly what he is and what he intends to do to people she loves.
She gave them the benefit of the doubt in 2016, she says, and assumed they just didn't know who he is and what he intended – hadn't troubled to inform themselves.

"But not this go-round – they knew full well and deliberately chose to hurt people she loves:
"When I cast my vote, I considered the safety and security and future of everyone in our family. That includes the members of our family that are disabled, those that would be uninsurable without the ACA, those that need special services, and those that draw on social security."
"It includes the young members who will never be able to compete in a kleptocracy, the old members who after contributing to society their whole lives deserve respect – not the insinuation that they’re
'takers,' and the middle-aged ones like me who are looking at the younger and older generations and wondering how we are going to hold them both up without falling below the waves ourselves."
"When I voted, I chose our family – every single member of our family – above politics.
And now, I’m choosing myself.
So no, I will not be hosting a holiday dinner this year. I will not smile sweetly and make small talk as my stomach churns. I will not twist myself into knots preparing a house and cooking a dinner to give thanks when I am anything but grateful."
"my husband has just called certain family members to inform them that I will not be cooking a full ass meal on Thanksgiving for people who voted for Donald Trump.
I did it in 2016 for my mother in law. She’s no longer with us. And I kept doing it because that’s what women do. We try to keep peace and make nice holidays because its easier.
And look where that got us."
@wdlindsy Very understandable. I'm so sorry for what this is putting you and all the rest of us through too. We all tried. That ought to count for something. We don't deserve what's happening to us.
@wdlindsy Yes sir 1000 times this cast not pearls before swine.
@wdlindsy Complying with any norm or expectation, gendered or otherwise, is a way to maintain the status quo/prevent progress. No one, especially those being asked to do extra work because they are part of a marginalized class, should ever comply with social expectations without first questioning whether compliance is really to the benefit of themselves, society, and/or their loved ones. Going along to get along just gets you trampled in the crowd.
@wdlindsy If your family holiday celebrations have always involved the women cooking while the men watch football and gender nonconforming family members are excluded or coerced into compliance, you have long been complicit in setting the scene for the oligarchs to divide and conquer and create the MAGA moment where it’s not only ok but cool for the male and the white to be openly supremacist and downright bigoted.
@PedestrianError For over 50 years, I have done all the holiday cooking in my household, which consists of two males. You're responding to a thread of excerpts from an article written by Michele Hornish.
@wdlindsy I meant it as a generic “you” to anyone reading the thread considering whether they should continue engaging in family customs that support patriarchy and fascism, not directed at you as the poster. Sorry if that was unclear.
@wdlindsy I think it's good, stop pretending those that voted for Trump haven't shown their true colors. It was perfectly ok to elect a convicted FELON, a convicted sexual assaulter, and a man who has promised through force to round up and deport 15 million immigrants??? You know that means anyone of brown to black skin will be hassled to prove they are citizens! My question is, if you were stopped and accused of being an illegal, could you prove your citizenship on the spot? It's evil!
@luv_wins I think about that often — If I were stopped and accuses of being an illegal, could I prove my citizenship then and there? With the kind of abuse of power that would come with roundups employing military folks, I can envisage lots of abuses in which people who are not even immigrants are targeted in just that way.
@wdlindsy
A reeducation initiative along the lines of postwar Germany's de-nazification will have to be part of any effective response. This means a radical rethinking of liberalism's attitudes towards tolerance.
But first we have to get these guys out of power.
@JoeChip So it seems to me, too. Educastion is so essential.
@wdlindsy they probably know it’s pointless; I’d never talk to someone who was comfortable going to a rally where they were standing shoulder-to-shoulder with nazis.
