"It's lazy and easy to think that our friends who are stuck on legacy platforms run by Zuckerberg and Musk lack the self-discipline to wean themselves off of these services, or lack the perspective to understand why it's so urgent to get away from them."

Dark days for corporate social media, and Cory Doctorow @pluralistic must be heard.

@gleick @pluralistic I’m so glad we’re having this convo. I feel stuck. I’ve made many posts and comments on other social media sites extolling the virtues of the fediverse and explaining how to join, but only 1 person I know tried it and gave up quickly. I love my family and friends but don’t have the time to email or text each one individually to keep in touch. And the groups are irreplaceable. My local buy-nothing group has provided me with food, clothing, and pet supplies…

@gleick @pluralistic …when I couldn’t have afforded them otherwise. My neighborhood shares important info in a fb group. I used to do gig apps and there are groups that share crucial local info for workers. Many small businesses rely on fb/insta for customers. I limit my time on those apps as much as possible, but completely leaving, which I would love to do, would have high personal costs, and would do virtually nothing to reduce profits for those companies. 😔

@mkandle @gleick @pluralistic Hopefully with ads blocked and FB purity to minimise their chances of making money off you by showing you what you don't want to see. I also have FB groups and contacts who I will never persuade elsewhere

@mkandle @gleick @pluralistic I understand that for some it may be more than just an inconvenience to leave fb. I would say, keep pushing for change; advocate and promote the reason to use decentralised services. To the last point, it isn’t about affecting the company’s profits, it’s about the intrinsic value of your own principles.
