Mona Charen writes,
"To treat human beings as props when there’s a real danger of exposure increases the cruelty quotient. The two Republican governors [Abbott and DeSantis] are in a heartlessness duel."
The two Republican governors who are both Catholic, one might well note — as the US Catholic bishops remain totally silent about these acts of performative cruelty that violate core Catholic values.
@wdlindsy The silence of the Catholic bishops speaks volumes about their “faith.”
@LindaVT I very much agree. And, though I know I'm probably making myself an irritant to some folks by saying that over and over here, I intend to keep saying it. They have to be called to accountability, because they have an overweening influence on our national political process and have helped engineer a hard-right Catholic bloc on the Supreme Court, which now controls the court.
@wdlindsy 100% agree.
@wdlindsy I don’t know which Christ they’re following. Not the one I read about.
@lauriehaley Definitely not the one I encounter in the gospels, who says his followers will be judged at the end of their lives on the basis of how they've treated the least among us, including strangers and guests.
@wdlindsy Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.
@wdlindsy That the same people who complain about the labor shortage are anti-immigrant says something. Pointing out that Abbot and DeSantis are Catholic, however, is anti-Catholic bigotry. People wouldn’t say ‘this politician, who is Baptist, by the way, while Baptist establishment stays quiet. We don’t need to exchanging one bigotry for another.
@GwladysPendlebury It's anti-Catholic bigotry for Catholics to state publicly that influential Catholics like DeSantis or Abbott betray core Catholic values?
So that means that those of us who are Catholic and want our religious values expressed adequately in the public square should be silent while people loudly pointing to their Catholic identity make mincemeat of our Catholic values — in a culture where religion and politics interplay?
Nonsense.
