“What brought Hitler to supreme power within a few months of being appointed Reich Chancellor was a combination of murderous political violence whose ruthlessness was beyond anything imagined by the world of conventional politics in Germany, and a propaganda offensive that violated every standard of truthfulness and decency."

"The extensive overlap between the aims of the anti-democratic elites, including business leaders and the military, and those of the Nazis, ensured that however the great the distaste of elites for the violence of the Nazis, they were willing to go along with their destruction of democracy.”

Highly recommend this 4 part podcast series for anyone trying to understand the man cult "man-o-verse" phenomenon that is currently rampaging in the US.
h/t @katrinakatrinka for posting this a few weeks ago.

@mastodonmigration Thank you — great, helpful links!
As someone who grew up during the 70s, and witnessed the destructive influence of cults on young people this is all very familiar.
@mastodonmigration Yes, definitely. I was a young adult then, and saw it happening from that perspective. The hard-right Catholic charismatic group in which Amy Coney Barrett grew up in New Orleans: I saw it at close hand, since I was a student there when it got started and got sucked into that movement for a few years before the scales fell from my eyes. It was — and there were other groups like this — an out-and-out cult, and it laid the foundation for so much that's happening now.
