Babu Menos on Mirlo:

‘The Secret Garden is Growing

‘I started using the “supporters” feature in Mirlo a few weeks ago, and while I’m still in the process of finding my footing, I am quite happy how things progress. Those who support me financially (there’s only one tier, €1.50 or more), every once in a while find behind-the-scenes audio, snippets of upcoming new releases, or — most recently — a demo of the original song “No I Can’t” that last year became “Not Again”. What had been a love song evolved into an anti-fascist protest song.

‘You can listen to the new incarnation “Not Again” here mirlo.space/babumenos/release/, and if you wish to become a Babista yourself and hear the original, please go this way mirlo.space/babumenos/support.

Fridays are, almost traditionally, release days. Usually, I don’t give a flying whatever, but today I’ll release a new track anyway. It’s called ‘Hold Me Tonight’ and I love it. Hope you do too.

‘Years ago, when I wrote and recorded under the moniker Zhouy and when climate catastrophe was even far less of a topic of any debate, I already felt threatened by the dystopian times to come (the very same we now live in). To cope, I wrote songs about this existential menace, as I still do now.

‘One outcome back then was the song ‘Hold Me Tonight’ which I release now in a freshly remastered version.

‘It was one of the rare occasions when I invited guest musicians. You’ll hear two additional backing vocalists, a cellist, and an electric (in more than one sense!) guitarist.’

While in the process of moving my music away from Bandcamp and to Mirlo (@mirlo), I listened to all the songs, some of which I hadn’t heard in quite a while.

Musicians, do you have favourites in your œuvre?

I realised I sure do. So I decided to share my personal top ten. Here we go:

🧵 1/2

1. Time Out (for its uplifting spirit and the welcome reminder to take it slow and easy)

2. Remember Paris (for its message’s closeness to my heart and the fact that the bass drum is actually a mic tapping on the desk)
mirlo.space/babumenos/release/

3. Only Lonely (for its glistering mood and open-tuning chord progressions)

4. Before Long (for its limitation to the bare essentials and the bossa-like groove)

5. One-Gether (for its celebration of solitude as a treat, not threat, and the supporting ‘oooh’ harmonies)

Wow, amazing blog post from @bsideguys about Bad Smell, from Play Both Sides.

"The track’s final metaphor of romantic interest as persistent unwanted odor transforms an everyday annoyance into something more profound – a wry commentary on how we sometimes mistake mere presence for worthiness."

I don’t think we've ever had such good/well written press before this album! #music #musicreview #altpop #alternativerock
